"Don't bore me with the price of bread. Don't clog my brain with politics." The king in "Lessons in Love and Violence" lives in his own world. He starves the people and cheats on his wife - with Gaveston, his lover. But he didn't reckon with the vengeance of his confidant Mortimer, who had been expropriated from him. George Benjamin has designed his new opera to be timeless, based on Christopher Marlowe's drama about King Edward II. After "Into the little Hill" (2006) and "Written on Skin" (2012), Benjamin has once again been very successful with the librettist Martin Crimp collaborated. Seven opera houses were involved in the original production in 2018. Now the piece, played by the outstanding Mahler Chamber Orchestra, is coming to the Philharmonie Essen: powerful musical theatre,

Er lässt das Volk hungern und betrügt seine Frau - mit Gaveston, seinem Liebhaber. Doch er hat nicht mit der Rachsucht seines von ihm enteigneten Vertrauten Mortimer gerechnet. George Benjamin hat seine neue Oper zeitlos gestaltet, angelehnt an ein Drama Christopher Marlowes über King Edward II. Nach "Into the little Hill" (2006) und "Written on Skin" (2012) hat Benjamin ein weiteres Mal sehr erfolgreich mit dem Librettisten Martin Crimp zusammengearbeitet. Gleich sieben Opernhäuser waren 2018 an der Originalproduktion beteiligt. Nun kommt das Stück, gespielt vom hervorragenden Mahler Chamber Orchestra, in die Philharmonie Essen: kraftvolles Musiktheater, das nur so brodelt vor Gewalt und Sinnlichkeit, wie die FAZ geschrieben hat.
