Премьера оперы «Лоэнгрин» состоялась 28 августа 1850 года в Веймаре. Дирижировал Ференц Лист, близкий друг Вагнера. Именно он способствовал постановке оперы, завершённой двумя годами ранее. Сам Вагнер на торжественном представлении присутствовать не мог: бурный общественный темперамент привёл его на баррикады немецкой революции 1848–1849 годов, после чего используя по счастливой случайности поддельные документы, он нашёл убежище в Швейцарии, где и находился в день премьеры. Сидя в одной из гостиниц Люцерна и глядя на часы, композитор пытался хронометрировать течение спектакля…

«Лоэнгрин» с его замедленным действием, способствующим погружению в созерцание возвышенного, мистически-непостижимого, контрастирует бурным событиям, пережитым автором по завершении работы над этой оперой. В ее основу положена легенда о Лоэнгрине, юном рыцаре священного Грааля, сошедшем с горних вершин в мир людей для того, чтобы быть им защитником. Либретто написано самим композитором, переосмыслившим в романтическом духе эпизод средневекового романа Вольфрама фон Эшенбаха «Парцифаль» (Лоэнгрин — сын Парцифаля).

Из романа заимствованы ключевые моменты и сюжетные мотивы: сакральность имени героя, знать которое нельзя никому из людей, и лебедь — спутник, сопровождающий его при явлении в земной мир. Но основные события либретто — плод фантазии самого композитора. В начале оперы звучит единственная, но настоятельная просьба рыцаря к его невесте Эльзе Брабантской, — никогда не спрашивать его имени. И всё же люди, даже самые совершенные, не способны сдержать свои страсти. Вопрос, заданный Эльзой (уже его супругой), в житейском смысле ожидаем. Жене необходимо знать имя своего мужа — неизвестность для неё мучительна. Возвышенной кульминацией финала становится монолог, в котором рыцарь называет своё имя… Прикосновение к сакральному неминуемо влечёт за собой его утрату. Поэтому итог оперы закономерен: уход Лоэнгрина в небесные выси так же таинствен и непостижим, как и его появление.

Через несколько лет после премьеры популярность «Лоэнгрина» стала расти лавинообразно. В 1853 году он был поставлен в Висбадене, в 1854  в Лейпциге, Бреслау, Штеттине, Франкфурте-на-Майне и Дармштадте, в 1855 — Кёльне, Гамбурге, Дюссельдорфе, Аугсбурге, Ганновере, Праге и Риге… Чуть позже к этим городам добавились Вена, Цюрих, Лондон, Болонья, Флоренция, Милан… В 1858 году на премьере «Лоэнгрина» в Мюнхене присутствовал будущий король Баварии Людвиг II. С этих пор эта опера и её автор стали для него объектами восхищения и поклонения, а его замок Нойшванштайн (интерьеры которого были вдохновлены «Лоэнгрином») — грандиозной «материализацией» этих чувств.

Уже при жизни композитора «Лоэнгрин» был признан как один из главных его шедевров. В том числе и в России. Это была первая опера Вагнера, поставленная на русской сцене: премьера состоялась в 1868 году в Мариинском театре. И если до революции 1917 года «Лоэнгрин» ещё заметно уступал в популярности «Тангейзеру», то позже уверенно вышел в лидеры. Это лидерство было особенно заметно в советское время, но сохраняется и до сих пор.

Первая постановка «Лоэнгрина» на сцене Большого театра была осуществлена в 1889 году. И сохранялась в репертуаре десятилетиями. Своим успехом спектакль прежде всего был обязан знаменитым исполнителям партий Лоэнгрина и Эльзы — Леониду Собинову и Антонине Неждановой. Вскоре после их ухода со сцены, в 1930-х годах, прервалась и история оперы о легендарном рыцаре Священного Грааля в Большом театре.

Спустя почти столетие «Лоэнгрин» вернулся на Историческую сцену. Последняя — нынешняя — постановка представляет собой величественное зрелище, в котором в духе современных фэнтези представлено противостояние мира язычества и мира христианства. Создатели спектакля, оперный и кинорежиссёр Франсуа Жирар и дирижёр Эван Роджистер — «вагнерианцы», погружённые в музыку великого композитора на протяжении многих лет. При их участии состоялись премьеры вагнеровских опер на сценах крупнейших театров Европы и Нового Света: в Метрополитен-опере и Канадской опере Торонто (Жирар), Немецкой опере Берлина (Роджистер) и др. Их постановка осуществлена в рамках совместного проекта Большого театра и Метрополитен-оперы.

The premiere of the opera Lohengrin took place on August 28, 1850 in Weimar. Franz Liszt, a close friend of Wagner, conducted. It was he who contributed to the production of the opera, completed two years earlier. Wagner himself could not attend the gala performance: his stormy public temperament led him to the barricades of the German revolution of 1848–1849, after which, by luck, using forged documents, he found refuge in Switzerland, where he was on the day of the premiere. Sitting in one of the hotels in Lucerne and looking at his watch, the composer tried to time the course of the performance...

"Lohengrin", with its slow action, promoting immersion in the contemplation of the sublime, mystical and incomprehensible, contrasts with the turbulent events experienced by the author upon completion of work on this opera. It is based on the legend of Lohengrin, the young knight of the Holy Grail, who descended from the mountain peaks into the world of people in order to be their protector. The libretto was written by the composer himself, who rethought in a romantic spirit an episode of Wolfram von Eschenbach’s medieval novel “Parzival” (Lohengrin is the son of Parzival).

Key points and plot motifs are borrowed from the novel: the sacredness of the hero’s name, which no one can know, and the swan - a companion that accompanies him when he appears in the earthly world. But the main events of the libretto are a figment of the composer’s own imagination. At the beginning of the opera, the knight makes a single, but urgent request to his bride Elsa of Brabant - never ask his name. And yet people, even the most perfect, are not able to control their passions. The question asked by Elsa (now his wife) is expected in an everyday sense. A wife needs to know her husband's name - the unknown is painful for her. The sublime culmination of the finale is a monologue in which the knight calls his name... Touching the sacred inevitably entails its loss. Therefore, the outcome of the opera is logical: Lohengrin’s departure into the heavenly heights is as mysterious and incomprehensible as his appearance.

A few years after the premiere, the popularity of Lohengrin began to grow like an avalanche. In 1853 it was staged in Wiesbaden, in 1854 in Leipzig, Breslau, Stettin, Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt, in 1855 in Cologne, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Augsburg, Hanover, Prague and Riga... A little later, these cities were added Vienna, Zurich, London, Bologna, Florence, Milan... In 1858, the future king of Bavaria, Ludwig II, was present at the premiere of Lohengrin in Munich. From then on, this opera and its author became objects of admiration and worship for him, and his Neuschwanstein Castle (whose interiors were inspired by Lohengrin) became a grandiose “materialization” of these feelings.

Already during the composer's lifetime, Lohengrin was recognized as one of his main masterpieces. Including in Russia. This was the first Wagner opera staged on the Russian stage: the premiere took place in 1868 at the Mariinsky Theater. And if before the revolution of 1917 “Lohengrin” was still noticeably inferior in popularity to “Tannhäuser”, then later it confidently became a leader. This leadership was especially noticeable in Soviet times, but continues to this day.

The first production of Lohengrin on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater took place in 1889. And it remained in the repertoire for decades. The performance owed its success primarily to the famous performers of the roles of Lohengrin and Elsa - Leonid Sobinov and Antonina Nezhdanova. Soon after their departure from the stage, in the 1930s, the history of the opera about the legendary Knight of the Holy Grail at the Bolshoi Theater was interrupted.

Almost a century later, Lohengrin returned to the Historical stage. The latest - current - production is a majestic spectacle, in which, in the spirit of modern fantasy, the confrontation between the world of paganism and the world of Christianity is presented. The creators of the performance, opera and film director François Girard and conductor Evan Roger, are “Wagnerians” who have been immersed in the music of the great composer for many years. With their participation, premieres of Wagnerian operas took place on the stages of the largest theaters in Europe and the New World: at the Metropolitan Opera and the Canadian Opera of Toronto (Girard), the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Rogister), etc. They were staged as part of a joint project of the Bolshoi Theater and the Metropol
