Herausragende Solisten, ein werkerfahrener Dirigent und ein spielfreudiges Orchester – was braucht es mehr zu einem aufregenden Opernabend? Wenn dann noch eine der bedeutendsten Opern der Musikgeschichte erklingt, steht einem erstklassigen Konzerterlebnis nichts mehr im Weg. Mit seinem Orfeo schrieb Claudio Monteverdi Musikgeschichte. Zwar ist das Werk nicht die erste Oper der Musikgeschichte (wie häufig angenommen), doch lieferte der Komponist einen, wenn nicht gar den maßgeblichen Beitrag zur Entwicklung der Gattung. Monteverdi selbst betitelte seine Oper, die 1607 in Mantua uraufgeführt wurde, als „Favola in Musica“, also als eine in Musik gesetzte Fabel, in der Text und Wort gleichwertig nebeneinanderstehen. Dass Monteverdi als Sujet ausgerechnet die Sage um Orpheus vertont, in der die Macht der Musik eine zentrale Rolle spielt, verwundert nicht. Und es verwundert auch nicht, dass Monteverdi hohe Ansprüche an den Sänger der Titelpartie stellt. Dieser soll nicht nur über eine schöne Stimme verfügen, sondern auch Virtuosität und Ausdruckskraft mitbringen. Neben den fein herausgearbeiteten Gesangsstimmen, die immer nah am Text deklamieren, widmet Monteverdi auch dem Orchesterpart große Aufmerksamkeit. Das für damalige Verhältnisse üppig besetzte Orchester hat nicht mehr nur belgleitende Funktion, sondern übernimmt auch eine handlungstragende Rolle. Kurzum: ein epochales Werk, das man keinesfalls verpassen sollte!
