Scotland in the 16th century. The wedding, supposedly the "best day of your life", turns into a nightmare for Lucia: at the urging of her brother Enrico, she signs the marriage contract with Lord Arturo, when her true love suddenly appears: Edgardo Ravenswood, her family's mortal enemy. He curses her. On the wedding night, Lucia kills her husband and returns to the party – her dress covered in blood, a dagger in her hand, close to madness.


The horribly beautiful singing of Lucia in her madness aria, accompanied in Coburg by the almost unearthly sounds of a glass harmonica, is undoubtedly one of the most famous and touching moments of this opera. She raises the question of who has actually lost her mind here: the betrayed and sold Lucia or the unscrupulous, mendacious society around her? Beyond the coloratura artistry typical of the time, in “Lucia di Lammermoor” Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) draws the deeply human portrait of a strong, desperate woman who becomes the plaything of her brother who is blinded by hate and who breaks at the impossibility of her love for Edgardo.


The internationally sought-after director Joan Anton Rechi, who most recently produced in Düsseldorf, Barcelona and Helsinki, is returning to the Landestheater after “Into the Woods”. Known for his visually powerful productions, he and the same team will bring this outstanding work of bel canto literature about love, hate, betrayal and jealousy to the stage in emotionally gripping images.

Die Hochzeit, der vermeintlich „schönste Tag des Lebens“, wird für Lucia zum Albtraum: Auf Drängen ihres Bruders Enrico unterschreibt sie den Ehevertrag mit Lord Arturo, als plötzlich ihre wahre Liebe erscheint: Edgardo Ravenswood, der Todfeind ihrer Familie. Dieser verflucht sie. Noch in der Hochzeitsnacht tötet Lucia ihren Ehemann und kehrt zur Festgesellschaft zurück – das Kleid blutverschmiert, ein Dolch in der Hand, dem Wahnsinn nahe.


Der schauerlich-schöne Gesang Lucias in ihrer Wahnsinnsarie, in Coburg begleitet von den beinahe überirdischen Klängen einer Glasharmonika, gehört zweifellos zu den berühmtesten und berührendsten Momenten dieser Oper. Sie wirft die Frage auf, wer hier eigentlich den Verstand verloren hat: die verratene und verkaufte Lucia oder die skrupellose, verlogene Gesellschaft um sie herum? Jenseits zeittypischer Koloraturartistik zeichnet Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) in „Lucia di Lammermoor“ das zutiefst menschliche Porträt einer starken, verzweifelten Frau, die zum Spielball ihres hassverblendeten Bruders wird und an der Unmöglichkeit ihrer Liebe zu Edgardo zerbricht.


Der international gefragte Regisseur Joan Anton Rechi, der u.a. zuletzt in Düsseldorf, Barcelona und Helsinki inszenierte, kehrt nach „Into the Woods“ wieder ans Landestheater zurück. Bekannt für seine bildstarken Inszenierungen wird er mit dem gleichen Team dieses herausragende Werk der Belcanto-Literatur über Liebe, Hass, Verrat und Eifersucht in emotional packenden Bildern auf die Bühne bringen.
