Gaetano Donizetti's bel canto opera Lucia di Lammermoor, staged by Amélie Niermeyer, is the current new production at the Hamburg State Opera. Under the musical direction of Giampaolo Bisanti, Venera Gimadieva embodies the title heroine, Christoph Pohl the role of Lord Enrico Ashton and Francesco Demuro the lover Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood. The trailer just came out.

Lucia loves Edgard, the last heir of the house of Ravenswood, her family’s enemy clan. They are in danger, as Lucia’s dreams reveal: she sees a dead woman, and the fountain into which her corpse was thrown runs red as blood. Lucia, however, refuses to betray her love, not even when Edgard has to leave the country, she is confronted with false proof of his faithlessness and is urged to marry Lord Arthur for political reasons. Yet she signs the wedding contract – and suddenly Edgard is back and told to renounce his love. A ring falls to the floor, the nightmare begins – the nocturnal sky fills with lightning and thunder, madness and blood reign, there is a corpse, then another and yet another. What time may heal these wounds?

Lucia liebt Edgardo, den letzten Hinterbliebenen des verfeindeten Familiengeschlechts Ravenswood. Ihnen droht Gefahr. Lucias Träume künden davon: Sie sieht eine tote Frau und die Quelle, in die man ihre Leiche warf, färbt sich rot wie Blut. Doch Lucia will ihrer Liebe nicht entsagen, auch nicht als Edgardo das Land verlassen muss, man ihr seine Untreue vortäuscht und sie zu einer politischen Ehe mit Lord Arturo drängt. Und doch setzt sie ihre Unterschrift unter den Ehevertrag – und plötzlich ist Edgardo wieder da und soll seiner Liebe entsagen. Ein Ring fällt zu Boden, der Albtraum beginnt – nachts unter Blitzen und Donner, in Wahn und Blut, eine Leiche, noch eine und eine letzte. Welche Zeit will diese Wunden heilen?
