Friedrich Schillers literarisch-dramatisches Werk stand bei dem Opernkomponisten Giuseppe Verdi hoch im Kurs. Vier seiner Dramen bildeten die Vorlagen für Opern des Italieners, darunter »Kabale und Liebe«. »Es ist ein großartiges Drama, voller Leidenschaft und theatralisch sehr effektvoll«, lobte Verdi den Stoff. 65 Jahre nach dessen Uraufführung adaptierte der Italiener das bürgerliche Trauerspiel fürs große Musiktheater: 1849 kam »Luisa Miller« im seinerzeit größten Opernhaus Europas heraus, dem Teatro San Carlo in Neapel. In bester Donizetti- und Bellini-Nachfolge schuf Verdi darin unter die Haut gehende Charakterstudien einer autoritären Gesellschaft, zuvorderst die virtuos-dramatische Titelpartie!

Luisa Miller is in love. Not in the count's henchman Wurm, who is constantly harassing her, but in Rodolfo, who turns out to be the count's son and reciprocates her passion. But a daughter-in-law from a humble background is out of the question for an over-ambitious sovereign who will stop at nothing for his own benefit. And so the Count and his worm weave a poisonous intrigue to destroy young happiness and secure prestige, power and wealth for themselves...

Friedrich Schiller's literary-dramatic work was very popular with the opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. Four of his dramas formed the basis for the Italian's operas, including »Kabale und Liebe«. "It's a great drama, full of passion and theatrically very effective," Verdi praised the material. 65 years after its premiere, the Italian adapted the bourgeois tragedy for the big music theater: in 1849 »Luisa Miller« was released in what was then the largest opera house in Europe, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In the best Donizetti and Bellini successor, Verdi created character studies of an authoritarian society that got under the skin, first and foremost the virtuoso-dramatic title role!
