The final concert at the 2024 Bergen International Festival will be conductor Edward Gardner’s farewell concert, with Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony being performed on 4 and 5 June next year.

Edward Gardner has been Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra since 2015 and will take over as Music Director of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet in August 2024. His last concert in the role of Chief Conductor of the Bergen orchestra will be during the Bergen International Festival, with the monumental Mahler's 8th Symphony in E-flat major on the programme.

Mahler's 8th is one of the greatest orchestral and choral works in the classical repertoire and is rarely performed. The work has been called the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’, and requires eight soloists and several choirs, in addition to the orchestra.

‘Try to imagine the whole universe beginning to ring and resound. There are no longer human voices, but planets and suns revolving.’ the composer said of his eighth symphony. When the work was premiered in 1910, with Mahler conducting, it broke all the rules and boundaries of what symphonies could and should be.

Den siste konserten under Festspillene i Bergen 2024 har fått tittelen Mahlers åttende – Avslutningskonsert og avskjed for Edward Gardner, og fremføres 4. og 5. juni neste år.

Edward Gardner har vært sjefdirigent for Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester siden 2015, og tar over som musikksjef ved Den Norske Opera & Ballett i august 2024. Hans siste konsert i rollen som sjefdirigent for BFO blir under Festspillene, med den monumentale Mahlers åttende symfoni i Ess-dur på programmet.

Mahlers’ åttende er et av de største orkester- og korverkene i det klassiske repertoaret, og fremføres sjelden. Verket er blitt kalt De tusendes symfoni, og krever åtte solister og flere kor, i tillegg til orkesteret.

«Forestill deg at hele universet begynner å klinge. Det er ikke lenger menneskestemmer du hører, men lyden av planeter og soler som spinner rundt oss», sa komponisten selv om sin åttende symfoni. Da verket ble urfremført i 1910, med Gustav Mahler som dirigent, sprengte det alle regler og grenser for hva symfonier kunne og skulle være.
