The opera Manon Lescaut is one of the best works of Giacomo Puccini.

Staged in 1893 in Turin, it became the composer's first and undoubted triumph. The libretto is based on a plot from Antoine Francois Prevost's book The Story of the Chevalier de Grieux and Manon Lescaut, one of the first examples of a psychological novel in the history of literature, which was very popular in Europe.

The creators of the performance at the Mikhailovsky Theater, stage director Jurgen Flimm and stage designer Georgy Tsypin, kept the scene - Paris, but changed the time and moved the events to the first third of the twentieth century. In their stage version, the heroine is an aspiring film actress, her lover is also an actor, and her wealthy patron is a Hollywood producer.

The scenography of the performance is close to the film noir style with characteristic light contrasts and dramatic shadows. Stage costumes directly refer to the cinema of the 1930s and 1940s. The emotional content remains unchanged, which the director defines with a brief formula: “A woman between two men and, as a result, a catastrophe.”
