Despite a turbulent gestation – the expectations of Giacomo Puccini will have overwhelmed the nerves of several librettists – Manon Lescaut draws the burning portrait of the first of her “little women”. They are the ones that will mark Italian opera at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century with an imprint as deep as that left by its illustrious predecessor: Giuseppe Verdi.

If Manon d'Auber and Massenet stick to a very French reading of Abbé Prévost's novel, that of the Italian composer aims directly at the heart with a realistic depiction of the real stakes of the drama. Even if the scene of Saint-Sulpice at Massenet opens a window on the impulses that animate the heroine, it is indeed Puccini who will captivate the public with his openly sensual reading, underlined by a lush orchestra with an uninterrupted melodic flow. Manon appears there unvarnished in the face of her intimate dilemma: choosing material comfort or the satisfaction of her carnal pleasure.
