Until the middle of the 19th century, the name Bach was hardly ever to be found in the concert programs and was only known to music connoisseurs. When a young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy performed the St. Matthew Passion in Berlin on March 11, 1829 with the support of Goethe friend and director of the Berlin Singing Academy Carl-Friedrich Zelter, this was to change in one fell swoop. This concert ushered in a Bach renaissance, which gave the composer his well-deserved place at the pivot of European music, which to this day is considered invincible.

As in 2015, when they reconstructed a concert from 1844 conducted by Mendelssohn with Handel's Israel in Egypt, Thomas Hennig and the Berlin Oratorio Choir are now performing that important concerto again - in the version they used more than 190 years ago years was performed. In contrast to the original version, Mendelssohn shortened it considerably in order to focus primarily on the choral passages. Experience Bach's monumental oratorio in a romantic context, just as it amazed the music world at the time!
