The strength of Giuseppe Verdi's early work lies mainly in impressive mass scenes and choral performances. The Babylonians under the leadership of King Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucca) invade Jerusalem, destroy Solomon's temple and take the Jewish people into captivity. However, the God of the Jews, Jehovah, punishes the king by sending madness upon him. Confronted with the intrigues of his supposed daughter Abigail, Nabucco finally recognizes his guilt, acknowledges the power and majesty of Jehovah God, and restores freedom to the Jews. The well-known "Choir of the Jews" became an updated symbol of the Italians' desire for freedom and independence at the time of the opera's creation.

The Jewish god Jehovah, however, punishes the king by making him insane. In the end Nabucco, who must also face the intrigues of his supposed daughter Abigail, recognizes his guilt, admits the power and magnificence of the god Jehovah, and gives the Jews their freedom back. The well-known "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" became, at the time of the operetta’s origin, an accentuated symbol of the desire of the Italians for freedom and independence.

Síla raného díla Giuseppe Verdiho spočívá zejména v působivých masových scénách a sborových výstupech. Babyloňané pod vedením krále Nabuchodonozora (Nabucca) vtrhnou do Jeruzaléma, zničí Šalamounův chrám a židovský národ odvlečou do zajetí. Bůh Židů Jehova však potrestá krále tím, že na něj sešle šílenství. Nabucco, který musí čelit intrikám své domnělé dcery Abigail, nakonec rozpozná svou vinu, uzná moc a vznešenost Boha Jehovy a vrátí Židům svobodu. Známý "Sbor Židů" se v době vzniku opery stal aktualizovaným symbolem touhy Italů po svobodě a nezávislosti.
