Nabucco, king of Babylon, triumphed over the Hebrews. Zaccaria, their high priest, threatens to kill Fenena, daughter of Nabucco, if he does not renounce his threats. Fenena also loves Ishmael, nephew of the King of Jerusalem. Only divine lightning seems to stop Nabucco who, by daring to proclaim himself the equal of God, falls down and loses his mind: his illegitimate daughter Abigaille, immediately takes advantage of the situation to steal his crown, seize power and to jail. Also in love with Ishmael and mad with jealousy, Abigaille condemns Fenena to death. From his cell, Nabucco prays to the God of the Jews. He will eventually be freed by a few loyal soldiers and will intervene just in time to save Fenena and free the oppressed Hebrews. Abigaille kills herself by poisoning herself and begs forgiveness for her crimes. (2h10)

Thanks to its “hit”, the famous “Va pensiero”, choir of Hebrews reduced to slavery, Nabucco has become one of the most popular and most performed opera titles in the world. But Nabucco cannot be reduced to this chorus, it is also a founding work of Verdi's style – a work which moreover appeared to the Italians as a symbolic image of their condition as a people occupied by the Austrians. The ardent humanity that exudes from his music will leave no heart indifferent...
