The strength of this early work by Giuseppe Verdi lies mainly in the impressive mass scenes and choral performances. The Babylonians, led by King Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco), invade Jerusalem, destroy Solomon's temple and take the Jewish people into captivity. However, Jehovah God Jehovah will punish the king by sending insanity upon him. Nabucco, who also faces the intrigues of his supposed daughter Abigail, finally recognizes his guilt, acknowledges the power and majesty of Jehovah God, and restores freedom to the Jews. At the time of the opera's opera, the well-known "Jewish Choir" became an updated symbol of the Italians' desire for freedom and independence.
