"Nixon in China" brings contemporary history to the opera stage and is about the first state visit of an American president to the People's Republic of China. On February 21, 1972, President Richard Nixon's plane, accompanied by his wife Pat and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, landed in Beijing. It comes to the legendary handshake with Mao Tse-Tung, the chairman of the Communist Party. The side program of the state visit includes an evening at the opera, where a revolutionary ballet staged by Madame Mao, the fourth wife of the chairman, will be performed. At the end, Prime Minister Chou En-lai looks to the future: "How much of what we did was good?"

As he says himself, the roles of the two female protagonists Pat and Madame Mao, or Chiang Ch'ing, were of particular importance to the composer. As the wives of politicians from two diametrically opposed worlds, they point to the alternatives of living together with a partner who is entangled in power and political manipulation, in analogy to the duality of yin and yang.

„Nixon in China“ bringt Zeitgeschichte auf die Opernbühne und handelt vom ersten Staatsbesuch eines amerikanischen Präsidenten in der Volksrepublik China. Am 21. Februar 1972 landet das Flugzeug des Präsidenten Richard Nixon, begleitet von seiner Frau Pat und dem Sicherheitsberater Henry Kissinger, in Peking. Es kommt zum legendären Handschlag mit Mao Tse-Tung, dem Vorsitzenden der Kommunistischen Partei. Zum Rahmenprogramm des Staatsbesuchs gehört ein Abend in der Oper, wo ein von Madame Mao, der vierten Ehefrau des Vorsitzenden, inszeniertes Revolutionsballett aufgeführt wird. Am Ende wirft Premierminister Chou En-lai seinen Blick in die Zukunft: „Wie viel von dem, was wir taten, war gut?“

Von besonderer Bedeutung waren für den Komponisten, wie er selbst sagt, die Rollen der beiden weiblichen Hauptfiguren Pat und Madame Mao, bzw. Chiang Ch’ing. Als Ehefrauen von Politikern zweier diametral entgegengesetzter Welten verweisen sie in Analogie zur Dualität von Yin und Yang auf die Alternativen des Zusammenlebens mit einem Partner, der in Macht und politische Manipulation verstrickt ist.
