With "Norma" Bellini achieved the perfection of the bel canto opera: the perfect interplay of virtuoso vocal art, melodic inventiveness and dramatic action. The focus is on one of the greatest title heroines in opera literature - a woman who is torn between public expectations and her own longings. After "La Straniera" in the 2013/2014 season, there is another opera by the Sicilian composer on the program of the Aalto Music Theater. Vincenzo Bellini had already celebrated success with the premiere of "La sonnambula" in 1831 and was then considered a rising star in the operatic sky. The premiere of "Norma" at the end of the same year at La Scala in Milan initially irritated the audience:

But soon the opera's success story was unstoppable - and since then hardly any of the great bel canto singers has missed the equally demanding and rewarding title role with her famous entrance aria "Casta Diva". The subject goes back to the tragedy of the same name by the French author Alexandre Soumet: Gaul, occupied by the Romans, is preparing for a retaliatory attack and is waiting for a divine sign. But the druid and high priestess Norma finds herself in a conflict. She, who is bound by a vow of chastity, leads a secret double life: Norma has two children with the Roman Pollione, whom she keeps hidden from the world. But Pollione has already turned away from her and has fallen in love with the young novice Adalgisa.
