Jacopo Peri 's Euridice is considered the first opera in the history of music. Inspired by the same myth, the version proposed by composer Luigi Rossi marked the first discovery in France of this still unknown genre: opera. Given at the court of France on the initiative of Mazarin in 1647, this tragicomedy dazzled with its machinery and its scenic illusions hitherto never seen, its unheard of voices of Italian castrati.
Raphaël Pichon and the Pygmalion ensemble offer a compact version that sublimates the score of great richness declining a palette of instrumental and vocal colors carried by a powerful recitative and the use of particularly lively choirs.
This re-creation given at the Opéra de Nancy last season is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the 2016-2017 season.
