Originally written for an alto castrato, Gluck revised the role of Orpheus for Paris, had it translated from Italian to French and intended it for a tenor, until Pauline Viardot asked Berlioz to write it. an arrangement for his contralto voice ultimately more in line with the original. The dazzling performance of the singer, on November 18, 1859, ensured an undeniable triumph for this exemplary version.

The story is well known: Orpheus mourns his deceased Eurydice when Cupid, sent by Jupiter, offers to fetch her from the Underworld on condition that he appeases the Furies with his song, does not look at his beloved or walk away from it. justify to her. This eternal theme has also inspired around twenty operas, Gluck's Orpheus being located halfway (in time) between the sublime Orfeo by Monteverdi and the hilarious Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach.

This mythical dimension inspires the work of Frédéric Flamand who for the first time agreed to stage an opera, supported in his resolutely innovative approach by the scenographer Hans Op de Beeck, an internationally recognized figure in the plastic arts. A first meeting between the Ballet de Marseille and the artists of the Opéra Théâtre that will mark a milestone!

Écrit à l’origine pour un castrat alto, Gluck révisa le rôle d’Orphée pour Paris, le fit traduire de l’italien au français et le destina à un ténor, jusqu’à ce que Pauline Viardot demande à Berlioz d’en écrire un arrangement pour sa voix de contralto finalement plus conforme à l’original. L’éblouissante prestation de la cantatrice, le 18 novembre 1859, assura un triomphe jamais démenti à cette version exemplaire.

L’histoire en est bien connue : Orphée pleure sa défunte Eurydice quand Amour, envoyé par Jupiter lui propose de l’aller chercher aux Enfers sous condition d’apaiser les Furies par son chant, de ne pas regarder son aimée ni de s’en justifier auprès d’elle. Ce thème éternel a d’ailleurs inspiré une vingtaine d’opéras, l’Orphée de Gluck se situant à mi-chemin (temporel) entre le sublime Orfeo de Monteverdi et l’hilarant Orphée aux Enfers d’Offenbach.

Cette dimension mythique inspire le travail de Frédéric Flamand qui pour la première fois a accepté de mettre en scène un opéra, soutenu dans sa démarche résolument novatrice par le scénographe Hans Op de Beeck, figure internationalement reconnue des arts plastiques. Une première rencontre entre le Ballet de Marseille et les artistes de l’Opéra Théâtre qui fera date !
