If Bach created some of the most beautiful works of sacred music, then the St Matthew Passion is amongst the most divine. Composed and premiered in 1727, it was revised in following years and revived a century later thanks to the enthusiasm of Felix Mendelssohn. According to the latter, it was “the most extraordinary of all the Christian works”, ensuring its continued place today at the summit of the great repertoire of choral music. In this new presentation at Gulbenkian Música, its sublime creation is revealed by the Slovenian conductor Martina Batič, musical director of the Radio France Choir.

Se J. S. Bach projetou no tempo algumas das mais belas obras de música sacra, a Paixão segundo São Mateus figura entre as criações que tocam o divino. Composta e estreada em 1727, seria alvo de revisões nos anos seguintes e amplamente recuperada um século mais tarde graças ao entusiasmo de Felix Mendelssohn. Dizia Mendelssohn que nela encontrava “a mais extraordinária de todas as obras cristãs”, impulsionando o lugar cimeiro que continua hoje a manter entre o grande repertório coral. Nesta nova apresentação da Gulbenkian Música, a sublime criação é revelada pela maestra eslovena Martina Batič, diretora musical do Coro da Radio France.
