C’est au début du XVIIIe siècle que se généralisa en Allemagne l’habitude de donner chaque Vendredi Saint une grande œuvre chorale fondée sur la Passion du Christ. Au cours des quelques années qui séparent la Passion selon Saint Jean (1723-24) de celle selon Saint Matthieu (1727), Bach n’a cessé d’enrichir son expérience musicale et d’apporter ainsi à sa seconde grande passion nombre d’innovations. Il porte au maximum l’ampleur sonore de l’ouvrage (introduction d’un troisième chœur) et renforce la variété du récitatif. Ce chef-d’œuvre de Bach clôt d’une certaine façon la très longue liste des Passions dont s’honore l’histoire de la musique. Celles qui viendront après ne seront plus, à de rares exceptions près, des Passions au sens liturgiques où Bach l’entendait et ouvriront la voie à la forme oratorio.

It was at the beginning of the 18th century that the habit became widespread in Germany of giving each Good Friday a great choral work based on the Passion of Christ. During the few years which separate the Passion according to Saint John (1723-24) from that according to Saint Matthew(1727), Bach never stopped enriching his musical experience and thus bringing a number of innovations to his second great passion. It maximizes the sonic breadth of the work (introduction of a third choir) and reinforces the variety of the recitative. This masterpiece by Bach closes in a certain way the very long list of Passions with which the history of music is honored. Those which will come after will no longer be, with rare exceptions, Passions in the liturgical sense in which Bach understood it and will open the way to the oratorio form.
