Mit seinen »Fontane di Roma« (»Die Brunnen Roms«) macht Ottorino Respighi 1917 international auf sich aufmerksam. Er ist kein ›Neutöner‹ des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern beschäftigt sich viel mit Alter Musik und sucht nach einer Synthese traditioneller Ästhetik mit den Klangwelten seiner Zeit. Mit seiner Vorliebe für naturalistische Tonmalerei nimmt er die Zuhörer mit auf einen Spaziergang durch Rom – von der Valle Giulia, vorbei am Trevibrunnen bis hin zum Brunnen der Villa Medici in der Abenddämmerung.

Auch ein Erich Wolfgang Korngold scheint musikalisch immer wieder ›aus seiner Zeit gefallen‹. Der Wiener Komponist fühlt sich Zeit seines Lebens trotz expressiver Ausflüge romantischen Idealen verpflichtet. Im amerikanischen Exil schreibt er am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs ein Violinkonzert, das so mitreißend melodisch und entwaffnend durch den Konzertsaal hallt, dass man aus dem Staunen nicht herauskommt.

Mit Robert Schumanns »3. Sinfonie«, die »Rheinische«, gehen die Philharmoniker dann akustisch wirklich ins 19. Jahrhundert zurück und im übertragenen Sinne auch wieder ans Wasser. 1850 tritt Schumann seine Anstellung in Düsseldorf an und setzt seinen Plan einer wegweisenden Sinfonie in Es-Dur in die Tat um. Bis dieser sinfonische Geniestreich jemals (wenn überhaupt) von den Konzertspielplänen verschwindet, fließt wohl noch viel Wasser den Rhein hinab.

Ottorino Respighi attracted international attention in 1917 with his »Fontane di Roma« (»The Fountains of Rome«). He is not a 'new sounder' from the early 20th century, but rather deals a lot with early music and searches for a synthesis of traditional aesthetics with the soundscapes of his time. With his penchant for naturalistic tone painting, he takes the listener on a stroll through Rome - from the Valle Giulia, past the Trevi Fountain to the fountain of the Villa Medici at dusk.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold, too, seems musically 'out of his time' again and again. Despite expressive excursions, the Viennese composer felt committed to romantic ideals throughout his life. In exile in America, at the end of the Second World War, he wrote a violin concerto that echoed through the concert hall in such an intoxicatingly melodic and disarming manner that one was amazed.

With Robert Schumann's »3. Symphony«, the »Rhenish«, the Philharmoniker then acoustically go back to the 19th century and, in a figurative sense, back to the water. In 1850 Schumann took up his post in Düsseldorf and put his plan for a groundbreaking symphony in E flat major into practice. A lot of water will flow down the Rhine before this symphonic stroke of genius ever (if ever) disappears from the concert schedules.
