Prince Yeletsky loves Lisa, who loves Hermann, who loves gambling… Lisa’s guardian, the Countess, or “Queen of Spades”, always knows which three cards to draw last for a winning hand. And how could that end well ? Lisa is the most poignant of victims, with her naive, passionate way to love. This piece is the culmination of dishevelled Romantism, madness, immoderation, and the fantastic touch shared by the Russian geniuses of the 20th century: Gogol, Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky himself, who had already adapted operas from Pushkin’s work before The Queen of Spades: Eugene Onegin and Mazeppa. Young Timofey Kulyabin is part of the age-old, brilliant line of Russian directors. This is his first opera in France, for which he gathered Russian and Ukrainian singers. After the success of The Enchantress, also by Tchaikovsky, this production allowed Daniele Rustioni to circle back to the Russian repertoire he knows so well.
