Bassist René Pape is one of the best contemporary performers of the role of Boris Godunov, a tsar whose torment for power, but who is also terrified. This time, Pape will play him in the opening broadcast of the new and long-awaited Season Met: Live in HD 2021-2022. Mussorgsky's masterpiece, which is one of the pillars of Russia's operatic repertoire, will be directed by Sebastian Weigle in its original version of 1869. Stephen Wadsworth's concise direction impressively captures the hope and suffering of the Russian people and the ruler himself.
