Brittens första, främsta och mest populära opera är ett mästerverk som belyser misstro, skuld och utsatthet i slutna samhällen. Här i en visuellt slående uppsättning i västkustmiljö.

I ett slutet kustsamhälle frias fiskaren Peter Grimes (Joachim Bäckström) från mord på sin lärlingspojke. Men att domstolen anser honom oskyldig hindrar inte invånarna från att döma honom. Den enda som ställer sig på Peters sida är Ellen Orford (Matilda Sterby). Hon ser till att han får en ny lärling som kan hjälpa till med det tunga fisket. Skvallret om Peter Grimes och hur han behandlar den nye pojken piskas på av mrs Sedley (Katarina Giotas) som driver fram en hetsjakt med fruktansvärda konsekvenser.

Det är samhället med dess dömande invånare och det utmattande havet som är de egentliga huvudpersonerna. Musiken genomsyras av havets humör, av våldsam konflikt och medkänsla med, den kanske skyldige, Peter Grimes.

För den västkustsanknutna uppsättningen står brittiska Netia Jones, som drömt om att regissera Peter Grimes sedan hon såg den som liten. Jones är uppskattad för sina operauppsättningar med stämningsfulla videoprojektioner som signum. Peter Grimes dirigeras av Christoph Gedschold, chefdirigent vid Köpenhamnsfilharmonien, Copenhagen Phil.

Britten’s first, foremost and most popular opera is a masterpiece that shines a spotlight on mistrust, guilt and vulnerability in closed communities. This visually striking production is set on the west coast of Sweden.

In a close-knit coastal community, fisherman Peter Grimes (Joachim Bäckström) is acquitted of murdering his young apprentice. But although the court has pronounced him innocent, the local inhabitants continue to judge him. The only person who is on Peter’s side is Ellen Orford (Matilda Sterby). She arranges for him to get a new apprentice to help with the heavy fishing work. Gossip about Peter Grimes and his ill-treatment of the new apprentice is stoked by Mrs. Sedley (Katarina Giotas), who incites a persecution of Peter with devastating consequences.

The real protagonists are the condemning inhabitants of the local community and the relentless sea. The music is suffused with the moods of the sea, by violent conflict and empathy for Peter Grimes, who may or may not be guilty.

This production, inspired by the Swedish west coast, is directed by British director Netia Jones, for whom directing Peter Grimes is a lifelong dream. Jones is acclaimed for her opera productions in which atmospheric video projections are a hallmark feature. Peter Grimes is conducted by Christoph Gedschold, Chief Conductor of the Copenhagen Phil.
