Choreograaf en regisseur Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is een fenomeen in de internationale dans- en operawereld, maar ook daarbuiten. Zo maakte hij choreografieën voor grote popsterren als Beyoncé en Madonna. Voor Idomeneo werkt hij samen met dansers van zijn eigen gezelschap Eastman. Het decor wordt ontworpen door de Japanse kunstenaar Chiharu Shiota, bekend om haar indrukwekkende touwsculpturen. In Idomeneo hebben de voortdurend veranderende constructies van rode touwen een grote symbolische lading. Ze staan symbool voor de verwikkelingen van het noodlot en bepalen de beweegruimte van dansers en personages.

Mozart in al zijn grandeur
De muzikale leiding is in handen van Laurence Cummings, een expert op het gebied van historische uitvoeringspraktijk. In zijn debuut bij De Nationale Opera leidt hij het Nederlands Kamerorkest en het Koor van De Nationale Opera door deze spannende partituur, waarin Mozart speelt met de conventies van de barok en tegelijkertijd vooruitwijst naar zijn bekende klassiekers. In de titelrol is de veelgeprezen tenor Daniel Behle te horen, die in Amsterdam eerder furore maakte als Der Königssohn in Königskinder en als Lohengrin. Verder bestaat het wervelende ensemble van solisten onder meer uit Cecilia Molinari, Anna El-Khashem en Jacquelyn Wagner – Mozartvertolkers pur sang.

Choreographer and director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is a phenomenon in the international dance and opera scene, and enjoys fame well beyond. He has choreographed for major pop stars such as Beyoncé and Madonna. For Idomeneo, he is working with dancers from his own company Eastman. The sets are designed by the Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, acclaimed for her impressive thread installations. The constantly evolving structures composed of red ropes that she uses in Idomeneo have deep symbolic meaning. They represent the twists and turns of fate, and determine the space in which the dancers and characters have to manoeuvre.

Mozart in all his grandeur
Laurence Cummings, an expert in historically informed performance practices, makes his debut at Dutch National Opera. He will be conducting the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Chorus of Dutch National Opera, guiding them through this fascinating score in which Mozart turns baroque conventions into a modern musical language capable of expressing the deepest of human emotions. The title role will be sung by the much-lauded tenor Daniel Behle, who previously enjoyed great success as the King’s Son in Königskinder and as Lohengrin. The scintillating cast of soloists also includes Cecilia Molinari, Anna El-Khashem and Jacquelyn Wagner, all Mozart singers pur sang.
