In the video course, music historian Mona Dániel and literary critic Dr. Márton Hoványi examine one opera or ballet each - first, they tour Mozart's opera Idomeneo, King of Crete, which will debut on May 13, 2023, together with the creators. In the second part, literary critic Márton Hoványi talks about the cultural-historical and mythological background of Mozart's opera, as well as the different interpretations of the work.

The Trojan War was such an important historical event that it became one of the main motives of the past 2800 years of European cultural history; its episodes and characters inspired thousands of artists. Mozart’s Idomeneo, re di Creta tells the story of the tired king returning from the Trojan War and the people of Crete as they are life threateningly exposed to the uncontrollable forces of nature. The piece was only played once before in the OPERA, in 1979. About a quarter century had to pass before it found its way back to the Budapest Opera House’s stage, this time directed by András Almási-Tóth, who emphasizes the fight between nature and humanity in a modern context, in which a metropolis is flooded by the sea and nature devours urban life and the human space. A trójai háború olyan fontos történelmi esemény, hogy az európai kultúrtörténet elmúlt 2800 évének egyik fő motívumává vált, epizódjai, alakjai művészek ezreit ihlették meg. Mozart Idomeneo, Kréta királya című operájának története szerint a trójai háborúból megtörten hazatérő király és a krétai nép életveszélyesen ki van téve a természet ember által irányíthatatlan erejének. A darabot egyetlen alkalommal, 1979-ben mutatta be az OPERA. Mintegy negyed évszázadnak kellett eltelnie, hogy visszataláljon a budapesti operaszínpadra, ezúttal Almási-Tóth András rendezésében, akinél különösen hangsúlyossá válik a természet és a humánum összecsapása egy mai környezetben, ahol a nagyvárost elönti a tenger, az urbánus létet, az emberi életteret felemészti a természet.
