Placed under the direction of their leader and founder William Christie, Les Arts Florissants offer a program featuring Marc-Antoine Charpentier and André Campra.
To move hearts and excite souls: this is the aim of religious music, and which is pursued in particular by composers stationed at the Royal Chapel at Versailles, such as Marc-Antoine Charpentier (under the reign of Louis XIV) or André Campra. (a bit later). The Psalms of the first Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nocturnes of the first, intended to accompany the celebrations of Holy Week, precede the Requiem of the other. One of the major works of French Baroque, this one displays a virtuosity and dramatic effects that evoke the operatic side of the composer's career, while integrating perfectly into the form and style of a mass for the dead.
