A stranger is announced who asks to speak to him: he enters. Mozart sees a man of a certain age, very well dressed, very noble of ways, even imposing: 'Sir, I was instructed by a very influential man to pay you a visit." "Who is it?" interrupts Mozart. "He does not want to reveal his identity." "Well, and what would he want?" "[...] he asks you to compose a Requiem [...] Employ all of your genius in the composition: you work for a connoisseur of music." "So much the better." "How long will it take?" " Four weeks." "Well, I will return in four weeks. What is the fee for your work?" "One hundred ducats." The stranger counts the money on the table and disappears. Mozart remains absorbed for a few moments in deep thought; then, abruptly, he asks for pen, ink and paper, and despite the protests of his wife, he begins to write. This creative enthusiasm lasts several days and nights, and with a constantly increasing fervor; but his body, already weak, cannot resist that enthusiasm: one morning he fell unconscious, and was forced to suspend work. Two or three days later, while his wife was trying to distract him from the gloomy thoughts that occupied him, he snapped: "It is for sure: I'm composing this Requiem for myself; it will serve for my funeral." Nothing could dissuade him from this idea.

Così ne scrisse Stendhal, in Vita di Mozart:
«Gli annunciano uno sconosciuto che chiede di parlargli: lo fanno entrare. Mozart si trova di fronte un uomo di una certa età, assai ben vestito, di modi nobilissimi, perfino un po' imponente: «Signore, sono stato incaricato di venire a rendervi visita da un uomo assai influente». «Chi è costui?», interruppe Mozart. «Non vuole svelare la sua identità.» «Bene! E che cosa desidera?» «[...]vi chiede di comporre un Requiem [...] Impiegate tutto il vostro genio nella composizione: lavorate per un intenditore di musica». «Tanto meglio.» «Quanto tempo vi occorre?» «Quattro settimane.» «Ebbene, tornerò tra quattro settimane. Qual è l'onorario per il vostro lavoro?» «Cento ducati.» Lo sconosciuto li conta sul tavolo e scompare. Mozart resta assorto per qualche istante in una profonda riflessione; poi, bruscamente, chiede penna, inchiostro, carta e, malgrado le rimostranze di sua moglie, comincia a scrivere. Questa foga creativa durò parecchi giorni: componeva giorno e notte, e con un fervore che sembrava in continuo aumento; ma il suo corpo, già debole, non poté resistere a quell'entusiasmo: un mattino cadde privo di conoscenza, e fu costretto a sospendere il lavoro. Due o tre giorni dopo, mentre sua moglie cercava di distrarlo dai cupi pensieri che lo occupavano, lui le rispose bruscamente: «Questo è certo: sto componendo questo Requiem per me stesso; servirà per il mio funerale». Niente riuscì a distoglierlo da questa idea.»
