Richard Wagner is one of the most influential composers in the history of music, a cultural hero, myth and symbol, whose work and views are still the subject of fanatical debate. Orchestral music belongs to his indisputable creative achievements: the technical perfection and expressiveness of his instrumentation was recognized even by skeptical critics. Wagner is a reformer of the art of orchestration, as well as the founder of conducting practice in its modern form.

Opera overtures occupy a significant place in his symphonic heritage. Wagner introduces new ideas that emerged in the programmatic symphonic poems of the New German School into the traditional genre of opera introductions. Wagner's overture is inseparable from the opera it precedes, not only because of thematic connections. Anticipating the drama, it illustrates not its external events, but the key philosophical problems behind the plot: the conflict of carnal and spiritual love in Tannhäuser, pessimism and eternally insatiable love longing in Tristan, the outpouring of heavenly grace into the world in Lohengrin and etc. The overtures included in the concert program form a kind of summary of Wagner’s mature work, a brief digest of the German heroic epic, which the composer developed throughout his life, borrowing motifs from chivalric novels, medieval legends,

Рихард Вагнер — один из самых влиятельных композиторов в истории музыки, культурный герой, миф и символ, чье творчество и взгляды до сих пор являются предметом фанатичных дебатов. Оркестровая музыка принадлежит к бесспорным его творческим достижениям: техническое совершенство и выразительность его инструментовки признавали даже скептически настроенные критики. Вагнер — реформатор искусства оркестровки, а также родоначальник дирижерской практики в ее современном виде.

Существенное место в его симфоническом наследии занимают оперные увертюры. В традиционный жанр вступления к опере Вагнер привносит новые идеи, сложившиеся в программных симфонических поэмах Новой немецкой школы. Вагнеровская увертюра неотделима от оперы, которой она предшествует, не только из-за тематических связей. Предвосхищая драму, она иллюстрирует не внешние ее события, а ключевые философские проблемы, стоящие за сюжетом: конфликт плотской и духовной любви в «Тангейзере», пессимизм и вечно неутолимое любовное томление в «Тристане», излияние небесной благодати в мир в «Лоэнгрине» и т.д. Вошедшие в программу концерта увертюры образуют своего рода конспект зрелого творчества Вагнера, краткий дайджест немецкого героического эпоса, который композитор разрабатывал всю жизнь, заимствуя мотивы из рыцарских романов, средневековых легенд, античных мифов и исторических хроник.
