Romeo and Juliet, by Charles Gounod Opera in a prologue and five acts, with music by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) and French libretto by Jules Barbier (1825-1901) and Michael Carré (1821-1872), based on the tragedy namesake of William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique, Paris, on April 27, 1867. Approximate duration: 2 h 40 min Romeo and Juliet meet at her birthday celebration, to which the former has arrived with his family hidden under the masks of she. The young people fall in love instantly, but they belong to enemy families: the Capulets and the Montagues. Due to this age-old rivalry, the lovers decide to get married in secret. In a fight between the two clans, Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo's best friend. In revenge, Romeo kills Tybalt, and is banished. after the farewell, her father informs Juliet that, following Teobaldo's last wish, she will be married by Paris. To avoid this fate that would separate her from her beloved Romeo, her Juliet will take a drug that will make her appear dead. Once in her tomb, Romeo will rescue her from her to take her with him and finally unite her lives. However, the young man does not find out about the plan in time and decides to take his own life with a powerful poison, seeing his beloved dead. Dying, he arrives at the tomb of Juliet, who awakens to discover that Romeo is dead. The pain is such that Juliet takes her own life.
