In love with Berlin and close to the avant-garde of Paul Hindemith and Kurt Weill, influenced by Milhaud and Stravinsky, Boris Blacher was a popular composer in Germany in the 1930s. from his position at the conservatory in Dresden, the Nazis considering his cheerful and festive music as "degenerate" and "Jewish", Blacher nevertheless continued to compose and to be performed.

Forced into exile, it was in Austria that Blacher wrote his Romeo and Juliet , a deliberately minimalist work – it must, context requires, be able to be played everywhere –, anti-romantic and radical. Faithful to Shakespeare's original language, it is nevertheless distinguished by an astonishingly modern cast of characters. The lovers of Verona being incarnated in turn by a group of singers, the notion of character is then exploded to collectively carry a Shakespearean poetry that rubs shoulders with the musical tradition of the Berlin cabaret.

Amoureux de Berlin et proche de l'avant-garde de Paul Hindemith et Kurt Weill, influencé par Milhaud et Stravinsky, Boris Blacher est un compositeur populaire dans l'Allemagne des années 30. Lorsqu'il est exclu de son poste au conservatoire de Dresde, les nazis considérant sa musique allègre et festive comme « dégénérée » et « juive », Blacher n'en continue pas moins de composer et d'être joué.

Contraint à l'exil, c'est en Autriche que Blacher écrit son Roméo et Juliette, une œuvre volontairement minimaliste – elle doit, contexte oblige, pouvoir être jouée partout –, anti-romantique et radicale. Fidèle à la langue originale de Shakespeare, elle se distingue pourtant par une distribution des personnages d'une étonnante modernité. Les amants de Vérone étant incarnés à tour de rôle par un groupe de chanteurs, la notion de personnage se trouve alors éclatée pour porter collectivement une poésie shakespearienne qui côtoie la tradition musicale du cabaret berlinois.
