The premiere of the one-act opera by Richard Strauss Salome took place at the Royal Opera Theatre of Dresden on the 9th of December 1905. It was performed under the leadership of conductor Ernst von Schuch by the orchestra, that was enlarged to one hundred and twenty musicians, and excellent cast, amongst which were famous Wagnerian singers Marie Wittich (Salome), Karel Burian (Herodes) and Karl Perron (Jochanaan). The author considered it to be an outstanding performance.

A scandalous reputation of the play by Oscar Wilde (1891), which became the foundation of the libretto, written by the composer himself, fuelled interest in the new opera even further. By 1906, Salome had appeared on the stages of sixteen European opera theatres, including Leipzig, Cologne, Milan, Turin… A year later – in New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. The Austrian premiere, held in 1906 in Graz under the direction of the author, gathered the best representatives of the music world: in the auditorium amongst other important names were Gustav Mahler, Giacomo Puccini, Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg.

Salome practically marked the birth of Richard Strauss as an opera composer, who had only had success in the symphonic genre prior to the premiere of this opera. The perception of his operatic music through the prism of the sound of a symphonic orchestra was reflected in the reviews: one of the critics, Friedrich Brandes, named the opera “an orchestral play with the explanatory theatrical performance by the opera singers”. Such sensation was supported significantly by the culmination of the opera: the orchestral “Salome’s Dance”. The understanding of the nature of Strauss’s voices, which combine the power of Wagnerian vocal elements with the finesse and acuteness of chamber singing inherent to the Austro-German tradition, came later.

The premiere became an iconic event in the history of musical expressionism as well as its success in “striving beyond consciousness”, leaning towards “borderline mental states, emotional agility, extreme subjectivity that often leads to the deformation of the surrounding world <…> through a prism of a character’s apprehension” (musicologist Natalia Vlasova). Such a condition found a reflection in several music compositions, created not long before the beginning of World War One, which accumulated the tension and fear of the future.

In Russia, it only became possible to perform Salome after the Revolution in 1917: a stumbling-block for the theatre in the pre-revolutionary era was a depiction of John the Baptist (Jochanaan) on stage, which fell under the prohibition by the spiritual and censorship committees of the Russian Empire. The first Russian staging to the music from the opera by Richard Strauss was a ballet scene “Salome’s Dance”, presented at the Bolshoi Theatre on the 6th of February 1921. That dance was realised by the famous choreographer Alexander Gorsky, who was then head of the ballet troupe of the Bolshoi. It was performed by one of the leading ballerinas of the theatre, Alexandra Balashova.

The full version of the opera was first shown on stage of the Bolshoi Theatre on the 11th of June 1925. In fact, that performance (directed by Iosif Lapitsky and designed by Mikhail Kurilko) was transferred to the Bolshoi from the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, where the premiere had taken place a year earlier. The best Russian Salome of 1920, Valentina Pavlovskaya, was also invited from Leningrad to perform the leading part. That production was successful: it enjoyed a renewal and stayed in the repertoire until 1929. However, then the stage history of this opera at the Bolshoi Theatre paused for almost a century.

The second production was realised on the Historic Stage in 2021 by chief conductor of the theatre Tugan Sokhiev, famous German director Claus Guth and designer Etienne Pluss (Switzerland).

The new production at the Bolshoi Theatre stylistically fits with the era of fin de siècle – the time, when Salome by Wilde and Strauss was born. However, the biblical story “sounds” modern within it. It is the story of subconscious fears and existential feelings of growing anxiety, about aiming to forget oneself in sensuality, about a passionate desire for freedom and rejection of patriarchal traditions. “If you listen carefully, there is a dangerous abyss and chasm hidden behind the musical beauties by Strauss” (Claus Guth).

Премьера одноактной оперы Рихарда Штрауса «Саломея» состоялась в Королевском оперном театре Дрездена 9 декабря 1905 года. Исполнение – под управлением дирижёра Эрнста фон Шуха с увеличенным до ста двадцати музыкантов оркестром и блестящим составом солистов, среди которых были знаменитые вагнеровские певцы Мария Виттих (Саломея), Карел Буриан (Ирод) и Карл Паррон (Иоканаан), – автор счёл выдающимся.

Скандальная репутация пьесы Оскара Уайльда (1891), которая послужила основой для либретто, написанного самим композитором, еще больше подогревала интерес к новой опере. Уже в 1906 году «Саломея» появилась на сценах шестнадцати европейских оперных театров, в том числе в Лейпциге, Кёльне, Милане, Турине… Годом позже – в Нью-Йорке, Париже, Амстердаме, Брюсселе. Австрийская премьера, состоявшаяся в 1906-м в Граце под управлением автора, собрала весь цвет музыкального мира: в зале среди прочих значимых особ присутствовали Густав Малер, Джакомо Пуччини, Арнольд Шёнберг и Альбан Берг.

«Саломея» фактически ознаменовала рождение Рихарда Штрауса как оперного композитора, который до премьеры этой оперы настоящего успеха добился лишь в симфоническом жанре. Восприятие его оперной музыки сквозь призму звучания симфонического оркестра отразили и первые рецензии: один из критиков, Фридрих Брандес, назвал оперу «оркестровой пьесой с поясняющей театральной игрой оперных певцов». Такому ощущению в значительной мере способствовала и кульминация оперы: оркестровый «Танец Саломеи». Понимание природы штраусовских голосов, сочетающих мощь вагнеровской вокальной стихии с тонкостью и изощрённостью камерного пения, присущей австро-немецкой традиции, пришло позднее.

Премьера стала знаковым событием и в истории музыкального экспрессионизма с его «устремлённостью за пределы сознания», тяготением «к пограничным психическим состояниям, эмоциональной взвинченностью, предельной субъективностью, нередко приводящей к деформации окружающего мира <…> сквозь призму восприятия героя» (музыковед Наталья Власова). Такое состояние нашло выражение в нескольких музыкальных сочинениях, созданных незадолго до начала Первой мировой войны, аккумулировавших накапливавшееся напряжение и страх перед будущим.

В России исполнение «Саломеи» стало возможным лишь после революций 1917 года: главным камнем преткновения для театров дореволюционной эпохи оказалось изображение на сцене пророка Иоанна Крестителя (Иоканаана), что подпадало под запрет духовно-цензурных комитетов Российской империи. Первой русской постановкой на музыку из оперы Рихарда Штрауса стала балетная сцена «Танец Саломеи», представленная в Большом театре 6 февраля 1921 года. Поставил этот танец знаменитый хореограф Александр Горский, тогдашний руководитель балетной труппы Большого, исполняла его одна из ведущих балерин театра Александра Балашова.

11 июня 1925 года на сцене Большого театра впервые была показана вся опера целиком. Этот спектакль (режиссёр Иосиф Лапицкий, художник-постановщик Михаил Курилко) был практически перенесён в Большой из ленинградского ГАТОБа, где премьера состоялась годом раньше. Из Ленинграда была приглашена также исполнительница заглавной партии — лучшая русская Саломея 1920-х годов Валентина Павловская. Эта постановка была успешной: она пережила возобновление и сохранялась в репертуаре до 1929 года. Однако после неё сценическая история этой оперы в Большом театре прервалась почти на столетие.

Вторая постановка была осуществлена на Исторической сцене в 2021 году главным дирижёром театра Туганом Сохиевым, известным немецким режиссёром Клаусом Гутом и сценографом Этьеном Плюссом (Швейцария).

Новый спектакль Большого театра стилистически соответствует эпохе fin de siècle – времени появления на свет «Саломей» Уайльда и Штрауса. Однако библейский сюжет «звучит» в нём очень современно. Это история о подсознательных страхах и экзистенциальном чувстве нарастающей тревоги, о стремлении забыться в сладострастии, о страстном желании свободы и отрицании патриархальных традиций. «Если вслушаться, за музыкальными красотами Штрауса таятся опасные пропасти и бездны» (Клаус Гут).
