Konsequent vermied Robert Schumann bei seinem ersten Oratorium ebendiese Gattungsbezeichnung. Zu sehr war ihm der Begriff mit dem religiösen Kontext verknüpft. Das Paradies und die Peri nannte er schlicht „Dichtung“ und zielte darauf, ein neues Genre zu begründen, „nicht für den Betsaal, sondern für heitere Menschen“. Der Geschichte von der Peri, einer geflügelten Figur aus der persischen Mythologie, begegnete der Komponist durch seinen Freund Emil Flechsig. Sie stammt aus dem Versepos Lalla Rookh von dem Iren Thomas Moore, welches Flechsig neu übersetzte. Die Titelheldin begehrt Einlass in das Paradies, der ihr aufgrund einer ererbten Schuld jedoch verwehrt wird. Erst wenn sie das Kostbarste auf Erden findet, darf sie eingelassen werden. Nach einer Reihe von Prüfungen ist es die Erkenntnis der reinen Unschuld eines Kindes, die ihr Erlösung bringt. Schumann überzeugte die poetische Kraft der Erzählung, die in seinen Augen „wie für Musik geschrieben“ war: „Die Idee des Ganzen ist so dichterisch, so rein, dass es mich ganz begeisterte.“

Mit dem Ansatz eines weltlichen Oratoriums beschreitet Schumann auch stilistisch Neuland. Er verwendet weitestgehend einen lyrisch-liedhaften Duktus und überwindet damit die Gegenüberstellung von Rezitativ und Arioso. Der koloraturlose, oft eingängige Gesang trug im 19. Jahrhundert ebenso zur großen Popularität des Werkes bei wie die exotischen Schauplätze der Handlung in Indien, Ägypten und Syrien. Seinerzeit als weltliches Erbauungswerk konzipiert, wurde Das Paradies und die Peri von den Nationalsozialisten zur Heroisierung des Opfertodes missbraucht. Erst in den letzten Jahren kommt es wieder zu Aufführungen. Es scheint, als habe die romantische Erlösungssehnsucht, die aus dem Oratorium spricht, angesichts der großen Widersprüche einer heutigen Lebenswirklichkeit wieder an Anziehungskraft gewonnen.

Robert Schumann consistently avoided this generic term in his first oratorio. The term was too closely linked to the religious context for him. Paradise and the Peri "poetry" and aimed to found a new genre, "not for the prayer room, but for cheerful people". The composer encountered the story of the Peri, a winged figure from Persian mythology, through his friend Emil Flechsig. It comes from the epic poem Lalla Rookh by the Irishman Thomas Moore, which Flechsig retranslated. The eponymous heroine seeks entry into paradise, but is denied due to an inherited guilt. Only when she finds the most precious thing on earth can she be admitted. After a series of trials, it is the realization of a child's pure innocence that brings her salvation. Schumann was won over by the poetic power of the story, which in his eyes was "as if written for music": "The whole idea is so poetic, so pure, that I was completely enthralled."

With the approach of a secular oratorio, Schumann also breaks new ground stylistically. He largely uses a lyrical, song-like style and thus overcomes the juxtaposition of recitative and arioso. The often catchy song without coloratura contributed to the great popularity of the work in the 19th century, as did the exotic scenes of the action in India, Egypt and Syria. Conceived at the time as a secular edification work, Das Paradies und die Peri was misused by the National Socialists to heroize sacrificial death. Only in the last few years have there been performances again. It seems as if the romantic longing for redemption that speaks from the oratorio has regained its appeal in view of the great contradictions of today's reality of life.
