The Astana Opera House opens its tenth anniversary theatre season with a concert featuring world opera star, Grammy Award winner soprano Sumi Jo (Korea). The concert is supported by the Korean Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Kazakhstan and to mark the year of cultural exchange.

Sumi Jo is one of the most sought-after sopranos of her generation. She is the highest-selling classical singer in the world, with over 50 recordings to her credit, including a Grammy-winning Die Frau ohne Schatten, Un Ballo in Maschera for Deutsche Grammophon and her most recent disc Mother (Universal Records), which won a Platinum Award in November 2019.

Her repertoire includes the most popular operatic roles: Gilda in Rigoletto, Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor and many others.

She has performed at such famous opera houses as Metropolitan Opera House New York, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, etc. Her partners on stage have been Plácido Domingo, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanča, Angela Gheorghiu and many others.

Sumi celebrated the 35th anniversary of her international opera debut in the 2021-22 season, touring Moscow, Paris, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Korea and many other countries.

She is active in cultural and social life; she has appeared in feature films and is a jury member of renowned international vocal competitions. In 2003, she was elected UNESCO ‘Artist for Peace’; in 2019, she became a Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia; included in the Asian Hall of Fame; awarded the Best Korean Cultural Brand and Korean Image Award (2022).

At the Opera Gala, leading soloists of the Astana Opera House will perform together with the famous singer. The soloists will present a programme of opera arias and duets accompanied by the Astana Opera Chorus and Symphony Orchestra conducted by Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Alan Buribayev
