En 2013, Thierry Escaich avait déjà livré à l'Opéra de Lyon Claude, sur un livret de Robert Badinter. Pour cette nouvelle création, le compositeur et organiste de renommée mondiale – ses trois Concertos pour orgue ont fait le tour du monde – s'est attaché les services d'un librettiste très spécial : l'écrivain franco-afghan Atiq Rahimi, lauréat du prix Goncourt en 2008 pour Syngué Sabour. Si après l'univers carcéral de Claude, Thierry Escaich s'attaque ici à un tout autre univers – celui des contes et légendes – on retrouve pourtant la patte du compositeur, cette fameuse « liturgie de l'angoisse » et une sensibilité musicale unique, rehaussée pour l'occasion de couleurs orientales inspirées par la musique iranienne traditionnelle. Avec Shirine, qui est aussi une réflexion sur la représentation, le compositeur se laisse aller à une écriture métaphorique qui glisse doucement vers la féerie persane. Une dimension que vient appuyer la mise en scène de Richard Brunel (Le Cercle de craie d'Alexander von Zemlinsky à l'Opéra de Lyon en 2018), ainsi qu'une distribution vocale composée de jeunes et grands talents (Julien Behr et Hélène Guilmette dans les rôles de Khosrow et Shirine).

In 2013, Thierry Escaich had already delivered Claude Claude to the Opéra de Lyon , to a libretto by Robert Badinter.
