Премьера спектакля в Камерном музыкальном театре им. Б.А. Покровского состоялась 14 июня 2000 года. Борис Александрович очень любил Гоголя и преклонялся перед Мусоргским. «Сорочинская ярмарка» принадлежит к лучшим режиссерским работам мастера последнего периода его творчества. За этот спектакль Камерный музыкальный театр получил Государственную премию России – и возобновил его в сезоне 2018/19.

Ночь на Лысой горе, Красная свитка и прочая чертовщина, пронизанная неповторимым малороссийским колоритом и особенным, чисто гоголевским юмором, — таков фон, на котором расцветает любовь Грицько и Параси, героев «Сорочинской ярмарки», повести из цикла «Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки», положенной на музыку Модестом Петровичем Мусоргским.

 Замысел комической оперы по произведениям Гоголя возник у композитора во время работы над редакциями «Бориса Годунова» и поиска сюжета для «народной музыкальной драмы». В 1874 году, уже работая над «Хованщиной», Мусоргский решил остановиться на повести «Сорочинская ярмарка». Об этом он пишет в письме к Л.И. Кармалиной: «“Хованщина” явится попозже, а раньше представится комическая опера “Сорочинская ярмарка”, по Гоголю. Это хорошо как экономия творческих сил. Два пудовика:”Борис” и “Хованщина“, рядом, могут придавить, а тут еще, т.е. в комической опере, та существенная польза, что характеры и обстановка обусловлены иною местностью, иным историческим бытом и новою для меня народностью». 

Еще одной причиной для обращения к «Сорочинской ярмарке» стало желание композитора подарить «малороссийскую» роль Осипу Петрову, легендарному басу, первому исполнителю партии Ивана Сусанина в «Жизни за царя» Глинки, с которым Мусоргский сблизился во время репетиций «Бориса Годунова» в 1873–74 годах. Однако смерть выдающегося певца, последовавшая в 1878 году, заставила Мусоргского на некоторое время приостановить работу над оперой (необходимо сделать оговорку – композитор делал паузу и в 1875 году, признавая «невозможность великоруссу прикинуться малоруссом и, стало быть, невозможность овладеть малорусским речитативом, т.е. всеми оттенками и особенностями музыкального контура малорусской речи»). 

Тем не менее в 1879 году Мусоргский представляет фрагменты из неоконченной оперы на концертах в Херсоне и Ялте к вящему удовольствию украинских слушателей: «“Сорочинская” <…> вызывала в Украине полнейшую симпатию; украинцы и украинки признали характер музыки “Сорочинской” вполне народным…» По-видимому, в следующем году Мусоргский сильно продвинулся в работе над сочинением, так как на страницах «Русского музыкального вестника» появились сообщения о грядущей постановке оперы. Но в 1881 году умер сам композитор – и опера осталась неоконченной. «Довести» ее до публикации взялись композитор Анатолий Лядов (по просьбе Римского-Корсакова) и поэт Арсений Голенищев-Кутузов. Лядов вскоре охладел к идее подготовки сочинения к полноценному спектаклю: он отредактировал и оркестровал только пять фрагментов («Вступление к опере», «Думка Паробка», «Гопак», «Сцена Хиври» и «Думка Параси»).  Композитором, первым объединившим все разрозненные фрагменты и доработавшим недостающие части, стал Цезарь Кюи. Как цельное оперное произведение (в 1913 году оперу поставили в Московском свободном театре как «полуоперу-полукомедию») «Сорочинская ярмарка» впервые была исполнена в Театре Музыкальной драмы Петрограда 13 октября 1917 года.

В начале 30-х годов прошлого столетия к опере обратился советский композитор Виссарион Шебалин. Проведя с музыковедом Павлом Ламмом огромную исследовательскую работу, они опубликовали совместную наиболее «аутентичную» версию «Сорочинской ярмарки», основываясь только на сохранившихся материалах и песенных записях Мусоргского. Премьера новой редакции состоялась в ленинградском Малом оперном театре под управлением Самуила Самосуда в 1931 году.

В Большом театре к единственной комической опере Мусоргского обращались лишь два раза – в 1925 году (музыкальная обработка Юрия Сахновского и Николая Голованова, дирижер – Николай Голованов, режиссер – Андрей Петровский, сценограф – Евгений Соколов) и в 1952-м (редакция Виссариона Шебалина, дирижер – Михаил Жуков, режиссер – Леонид Баратов, сценограф – Евгений Чемодуров, хореограф – Ростислав Захаров).

Premiere of the play at the Chamber Musical Theater named after B.A. Pokrovsky took place on June 14, 2000. Boris Alexandrovich loved Gogol very much and admired Mussorgsky. "Sorochinsky Fair" belongs to the best directorial works of the master of the last period of his work. For this performance, the Chamber Musical Theater received the State Prize of Russia - and resumed it in the 2018/19 season.

Night on Bald Mountain, the Red Scroll and other devilry, imbued with a unique Little Russian flavor and special, purely Gogolian humor - this is the background against which the love of Gritsko and Parasi, the heroes of the Sorochinskaya Fair, the story from the cycle Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, blooms set to music by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky.

 The composer came up with the idea of ​​a comic opera based on Gogol's works while working on the editions of Boris Godunov and searching for a plot for a "folk musical drama". In 1874, already working on "Khovanshchina", Mussorgsky decided to dwell on the story "Sorochinsky Fair". He writes about this in a letter to L.I. Karmalina: ““Khovanshchina” will appear later, and before that, the comic opera “Sorochinsky Fair”, according to Gogol, will be presented. This is good as saving creative forces. Two pudoviks: "Boris" and "Khovanshchina", nearby, can press down, but here it is, i.e. in a comic opera, the essential benefit is that the characters and the setting are due to a different locality, a different historical way of life and a new nationality for me. 

Another reason for turning to the Sorochinskaya Fair was the composer’s desire to present the “Little Russian” role to Osip Petrov, the legendary bass, the first performer of the part of Ivan Susanin in Glinka’s Life for the Tsar, with whom Mussorgsky became close during the rehearsals of Boris Godunov in 1873 -74 years. However, the death of an outstanding singer, which followed in 1878, forced Mussorgsky to suspend work on the opera for some time (a reservation must be made - the composer paused in 1875, recognizing "the impossibility of a Great Russian pretending to be a Little Russian and, therefore, the impossibility of mastering the Little Russian recitative, i. e. all the shades and features of the musical contour of Little Russian speech”). 

Nevertheless, in 1879, Mussorgsky presented fragments from the unfinished opera at concerts in Kherson and Yalta to the great delight of Ukrainian listeners: “Sorochinskaya <…> aroused complete sympathy in Ukraine; Ukrainians and Ukrainian women recognized the nature of the music of “Sorochinsky” as quite folk ... ” Apparently, in the following year, Mussorgsky made great progress in his work on the composition, since reports appeared on the pages of the Russian Musical Bulletin about the upcoming production of the opera. But in 1881 the composer himself died, and the opera remained unfinished. Composer Anatoly Lyadov (at the request of Rimsky-Korsakov) and poet Arseny Golenishchev-Kutuzov undertook to bring it to publication. Lyadov soon lost interest in the idea of ​​preparing the composition for a full-fledged performance: he edited and orchestrated only five fragments (“Introduction to the Opera”, “Dumka Parobka”, “Gopak”, Khivri Scene and Dumka Parasi). The composer who was the first to combine all the disparate fragments and finalize the missing parts was Caesar Cui. As an integral opera work (in 1913 the opera was staged at the Moscow Free Theater as a “half-opera-half-comedy”) “Sorochinsky Fair” was first performed at the Musical Drama Theater of Petrograd on October 13, 1917.

In the early 1930s, the Soviet composer Vissarion Shebalin turned to opera. Having carried out a huge research work with the musicologist Pavel Lamm, they jointly published the most “authentic” version of the Sorochinskaya Fair, based only on the surviving materials and song recordings of Mussorgsky. The premiere of the new version took place at the Leningrad Maly Opera Theater conducted by Samuil Samosud in 1931.

At the Bolshoi Theater, Mussorgsky's only comic opera was addressed only twice - in 1925 (musical arrangement by Yuri Sakhnovsky and Nikolai Golovanov, conductor - Nikolai Golovanov, director - Andrei Petrovsky, set designer - Yevgeny Sokolov) and in 1952 (edited by Vissarion Shebalin, conductor - Mikhail Zhukov, director - Leonid Baratov, stage designer - Yevgeny Chemodurov, choreographer - Rostislav Zakharov).
