Stiffelio is an absolute masterpiece of opera, anticipating the famous triad of G. Verdi (Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La Traviata), which laid the foundation for the genre of lyrical drama. The fate of Stiffelio seems extremely unfair to us today: the world premiere was unsuccessful, the opera was tormented by censorship, and then forgotten for many years. The revival began only in the 1960s, and the opera has never been staged in our country. The Russian premiere of Stiffelio is undoubtedly the most important theatrical event of the season, opening to the public an unknown opera by the most famous author.

For the first time in Russia, a concert performance of Stiffelio took place in 2020 at the Epiphany Festival at the Novaya Opera, conducted by Alexander Samoile . And now, two years later, Alexander Grigoryevich Samoile is the musical director and conductor of the premiere at the Novaya Opera. A recognized connoisseur of Italian opera in general and Verdi's work in particular, he calls Stiffelio a "pleasure opera" and emphasizes the well-made parts, ensemble and choral scenes.
