‘The music of Beethoven is essential across the board. It is all or nothing. Life or death.’ In recent seasons, Kristiina Poska’s dedication to his oeuvre has only increased. So, what does his Symphony No. 8 tell us about life and death. It is light-hearted, sometimes even seemingly superficial, but also ironic and often irresistibly funny… However often you listen to it, this high-spirited symphony always wrongfoots you. Shostakovich also harnessed the same ironic power almost a century and a half later. To fabulous effect. In his Cello Concerto, he linked his own musical handshake to the favourite melody of the now deceased Stalin. Talk about musical humour! Bitter, cutting and efficient. Cellist Johannes Moser performs Shostakovich’s Concerto precisely and vitally, entreatingly and threateningly.

Dus, wat vertelt zijn Achtste Symfonie ons dan over leven en dood. Lichthartig, soms zelfs schijnbaar oppervlakkig, maar ook ironisch en vaak onweerstaanbaar grappig ... Hoe vaak je er ook naar luistert, deze levenslustige symfonie zet je telkens weer op het verkeerde been. 

Ook Sjostakovitsj benutte, bijna anderhalve eeuw later, dezelfde kracht van de ironie. En hoe. In zijn Celloconcerto koppelde hij zijn eigen muzikale handdruk aan de lievelingsmelodie van de ondertussen overleden Stalin. Van muzikale humor gesproken! Bitter, snijdend en efficiënt. Cellist Johannes Moser brengt Sjostakovitsj' Concerto precies en vitaal, smekend en dreigend.

Une question de vie ou de mort. » Ces dernières années, le dévouement de Kristiina Poska à l'œuvre du compositeur n'a fait que grandir. La Symphonie n° 8 est enjouée, parfois même superficielle en apparence, mais aussi empreinte d'ironie et souvent irrésistiblement drôle. Peu importe combien de fois on l'écoute, l'œuvre pleine de vie nous prend toujours à contre-pied.
Près d'un demi-siècle après Beethoven, Chostakovitch a exploité la même puissance ironique – et comment ! Dans son Concerto pour violoncelle, il a uni son propre style musical à la mélodie préférée de Staline, décédé quelques années auparavant. En parlant d'humour musical… Ce concerto est amer, tranchant et efficace. Le violoncelliste Johannes Moser donne une interprétation précise et vitale, suppliante et menaçante du Concerto de Chostakovitch.
