Johann Sebastian Bach's first great work as cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig has spoken for hundreds of years to believers as irreligious in their universal language. Instead of a suffering human sacrifice, the Passion of John depicts Jesus as a cosmic energy that has broken human chains and whose arms reach around the whole of humanity. Delicate arias, heartbreaking interludes and uplifting choral scenes are among Bach's most touching.
