Production of the festival on period instruments

Tancredi is the first "serious opera" (non-buffa) composed by Rossini for Venice in 1813. It had the effect of a revolution in Italian opera. The subject borrowed from the eponymous tragedy by Voltaire, lays the foundations of the nascent romantic opera and brings him to almost 21 years of fame throughout Europe. The libretto recounts Amenaïde's love for Tancred, while her father Argirio, king of Syracuse, gives his hand to the Duke of Sicily Orbazzano to reconcile their two families against the Saracens. Tancred, championing Amenaïde, leads Syracuse into battle, triumphs but is mortally wounded… For Stendhal, present at its premiere, Tancredi was already the composer's most successful and fascinating work. Combining innovative orchestration and an exceptional gift for melody, Rossini invites us to a vocal fireworks display that bewitched the Venetians, notably with the famous aria “Di tanti palpiti” which immediately enjoyed immense popularity. To interpret this Tancredi, we have called on the formidable Rossinian singers: Clémentine Margaine and Matthew Newlin, accustomed to the greatest world stages such as the Met in New York, Covent Garden in London or the Deutsche Oper in Berlin… but also two young truly exceptional talents: Amina Edriss, coloratura soprano and Valentin Thill, tenor.

Tancrède est un opéra, melodramma eroico en 2 actes, composé par Rossini en 1813 pour la Fenice de Venise. L’histoire vient de la tragédie homonyme de Voltaire, lui-même inspiré par l’histoire de Tancrède de Hauteville seigneur Normand. Le héros de Voltaire est engagé en Sicile dans les années 1005. 

Le livret de Rossi relate une histoire d’amour impossible mais qui, comme le veut la tradition de l’opéra seria, aura une fin heureuse. Après la première, Rossini commande la rédaction d’une nouvelle fin plus proche de celle écrite par Voltaire. Cette nouvelle version est jouée au Teatro Comunale de Ferrare. Il s’agit de la version présentée par le Cercle de l’Harmonie et Jérémie Rhorer.  

Ce titre marque alors le premier succès de Rossini et les fondations de l’opéra romantique. Tancrède est exporté en Europe et connaît une renommée internationale. Et pour cause, ses mélodies et son orchestration sont originales tout en respectant les codes et une simplicité charmante. L’air “Di tanti palpiti” deviendra, d’ailleurs, instantanément célèbre auprès des vénitiens.
