In the Bockenheimer Depot, Benjamin Britten's church parables »The Prodigal Son / The Burning Fiery Furnace« are presented in a form that attempts to do justice to their experimental origins. In this introductory lecture, dramaturg Konrad Kuhn gives an overview of the creation, the plot and the musical characteristics of the works in this double evening.

Benjamin Britten uses two biblical parables for his two one-act plays: the story of the prodigal son from the Gospel of Luke and the episode of the youths in the fiery furnace from the book of Daniel.

A father has two unequal sons: the younger one takes his inheritance and squanders it, instigated by a seducer. When he returns impoverished, his father welcomes him with love and forgives him; despite the displeasure of the older, hard-working brother: The joy at the return of the prodigal son outweighs any reproach.

Three young Hebrew men refuse to worship the golden idol erected by King Nebuchadnezzar and are punished by being thrown into a fiery furnace. Miraculously, they survive the flames unscathed. The Babylonian king then converted to the Israelite god.

Benjamin Britten wrote with Curlew River in 1964 for the Aldeburgh Festival he founded in 1948 in his beloved East England homeland, based on material from Japanese Noh theatre, a one-act play for the purpose of performance in a church. The other two "church operas" followed in 1966 and 1968. All three works were first performed at Orford Parish Church, Suffolk. What they have in common is the ritual approach, with the last two alluding to Christian traditions: an abbot enters the church with his monks and lay brothers to perform the highly formalized event. The performers slip into their costumes in front of the audience. From this quasi-liturgical framework, the composer was inspired to create a highly idiosyncratic new form of theater using medieval chorales, the scenic integration of the musicians and the use of exotic instruments.

Benjamin Britten greift für seine beiden Einakter zwei biblische Gleichnisse auf: die Geschichte vom verlorenen Sohn aus dem Lukas-Evangelium und die Episode von den Jünglingen im Feuerofen aus dem Buch Daniel.

Ein Vater hat zwei ungleiche Söhne: Der jüngere lässt sich sein Erbe auszahlen und verprasst es, von einem Verführer angestiftet. Als er vollkommen verarmt zurückkehrt, nimmt ihn der Vater in Liebe auf und verzeiht ihm; dem Unmut des älteren, fleißigen Bruders zum Trotz: Die Freude über die Rückkehr des verlorenen Sohns überwiegt allen Tadel.

Drei hebräische Jünglinge weigern sich, das von König Nebukadnezar errichtete goldene Götzenbild anzubeten, und werden zur Strafe in einen glühenden Feuerofen geworfen. Durch ein Wunder überleben sie die Flammen unversehrt. Daraufhin bekehrt sich der babylonische König zum israelitischen Gott.

Für das 1948 von ihm gegründete Aldeburgh Festival in seiner geliebten ostenglischen Heimat schrieb Benjamin Britten 1964 mit Curlew River, fußend auf einem Stoff aus dem japanischen Nō-Theater, einen Einakter zum Zweck der Aufführung in einer Kirche. 1966 und 1968 folgten die beiden anderen »Kirchenopern«. Alle drei Werke wurden in der Pfarrkirche von Orford, Suffolk, uraufgeführt. Gemeinsam ist ihnen der rituelle Ansatz, wobei die beiden letzten auf christliche Traditionen anspielen: Ein Abt zieht mit seinen Mönchen und Laienbrüdern in die Kirche ein, um das stark formalisierte Geschehen aufzuführen. Vor den Augen des Publikums schlüpfen die Darsteller in ihre Kostüme. Von diesem quasi-liturgischen Rahmen ließ sich der Komponist unter Verwendung mittelalterlicher Choräle, der szenischen Einbindung der Musiker und dem Einsatz zum Teil exotischer Instrumente zu einer höchst eigenwilligen neuen Theaterform anregen. Das Bockenheimer Depot als variabler Raum wird zum idealen Spielort für Brittens »Kirchen-Parabeln«.
