GESPRÄCH zu DER MIKADO - Spielzeit 2023/2024

DAS SCHARFRICHTERBEIL Erzählt wird die Geschichte der fiktiven japanischen Stadt Titipu, wo der Mikado drakonische Strafen verhängt hat: Auf Flirten steht der Tod. Der ebenjenes Vergehens überführte Scharfrichter Ko-Ko kämpft mit dem Problem, sich nicht selbst enthaupten zu können. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass er kein Blut sehen kann. Pooh-Bah ist ein korrupter Beamter, der alle Staatsämter auf sich vereint und deshalb ständig mit sich selbst in Konflikt gerät. Und der Sohn des Mikado, Nanki-Poo, tourt inkognito als Minnesänger durch die Lande, um der Ehe mit der kratzbürstigen Hofdame Katisha zu entgehen, gleichwohl deren linkes Schulterblatt von außergewöhnlicher Schönheit ist. Doch eines Tages kehrt Nanki-Poo nach Titipu zurück, um seine große Liebe Yum-Yum zu heiraten, die allerdings mittlerweile mit Ko-Ko verlobt ist…

 

ENGLISCHE OPERETTE Mit schwarzem Humor schrieb das Erfolgsduo Gilbert & Sullivan mit Der Mikado (1885) eine bissige Satire auf die viktorianische Gesellschaft in exotischem Gewand. Im angelsächsischen Raum gehören die Texte und Melodien der Operette zum Kulturgut und werden bis heute in Filmen und Büchern zitiert. Jede der Nummern ist ein Hit: Ko-Kos berühmter „List“-Song sowie sein Lied über „Tit-Willow“, einen suizidgefährdeten Vogel, Nanki-Poos Auftrittsarie „A Wand'ring Minstrel I“, Yum-Yums berührende Ballade „The Sun and I“, der Mikado-Song „A More Humane Mikado“ oder das charmante Schulmädchentrio „Three Little Maids“.

ENGLISH HUMOR This wonderfully funny operetta tells the story of the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, where flirting is death. Executioner Ko-Ko, who was convicted of the same crime, struggles with the problem of not being able to behead himself. Pooh-Bah is a corrupt official who holds all state offices and is therefore constantly in conflict with himself. And the Mikado's son, Nanki-Poo, tours the country incognito as a minstrel in order to avoid marriage to the prickly court lady Katisha, despite the fact that her left shoulder blade is of extraordinary beauty. But one day Nanki-Poo returns to Titipu to marry his true love Yum-Yum, who is now engaged to Ko-Ko...

 

ENGLISH OPERAET With black humor, the successful duo Gilbert & Sullivan wrote The Mikado (1885), a biting satire on Victorian society in an exotic guise. In the Anglo-Saxon world, the texts and melodies of the operetta are part of the cultural heritage and are still quoted in films and books today. Each of the numbers is a hit: Ko-Ko's famous "List" song as well as his song about "Tit-Willow", a suicidal bird, Nanki-Poo's performance aria "A Wand'ring Minstrel I", Yum-Yum's touching ballad "The Sun and I", the Mikado song "A More Humane Mikado" or the charming schoolgirl trio "Three Little Maids".

 

ENGLISH EXPERTISE The Landestheater Niederbayern was able to recruit Simon Butteriss, a Gilbert and Sullivan legend in England, as director. He played the role of Ko-Ko countless times and staged the play all over the world. The "Daily Mail" spoke of him as "the greatest living Englishman" who knows how to respect tradition in the spirit of Gilbert & Sullivan and at the same time make it relevant for today's audience.
