It is to a Florentine, Giovanni Battista Lulli, that we owe the creation of lyrical tragedy, a form that would dominate the world of opera in France for more than a century. If his first works ( Cadmus, Alceste ) still bear traces of the mixture of registers then in progress until then, especially the Italian influence, Theseusasserts itself as the first opus in a now highly codified form: an overture “à la française”, an allegorical prologue to the glory of the king and five acts illustrating a heroic subject. Here the extremely concise libretto goes straight to the point and achieves a unity of tone and dramatic tension hitherto unequaled. The contribution of the libretto by Quinault, a playwright of formidable efficiency, has a lot to do with the success of the work. Indeed the clarity of the poet's verse seems to be the obvious and perfect double of Lully's music. Christophe Rousset continues his exploration of the Lullian corpus surrounded by a team of soloists experienced in the art of declamation as much as that of singing.

C’est à un florentin, Giovanni Battista Lulli, que l’on doit la création de la tragédie lyrique, une forme qui allait dominer le monde de l’opéra en France pendant plus d’un siècle. Si ses premiers ouvrages (Cadmus, Alceste) portent encore les traces du mélange des registres alors en cours jusqu’alors, en particulier l’influence italienne, Thésée s’affirme comme le premier opus d’une forme désormais très codifiée : une ouverture « à la française », un prologue allégorique à la gloire du roi et cinq actes illustrant un sujet héroïque. Ici le livret d’une extrême concision va à l’essentiel et atteint une unité de ton et de tension dramatique jusqu’alors inégalée. L’apport du livret de Quinault, dramaturge d’une redoutable efficacité est pour beaucoup dans la réussite de l’œuvre. En effet la clarté du vers du poète semble être le double évident et parfait de la musique de Lully. Christophe Rousset poursuit son exploration du corpus lullien entouré d’une équipe de solistes rompue à l’art de la déclamation tout autant que celui du chant.
