Illica's careful revision of the libretto in association with Giacosa provided Puccini with the foundation for the most representative work of his mature style. Toscahighlights his ability to outline, through musical language, complex characters, strong characters trained in a dramatic journey with a tragic end for each of them. Neither the singer Floria Tosca, completely dedicated to her feelings for the painter Mario Cavaradossi, but extremely jealous, nor her boyfriend - animated by revolutionary feelings, capable of the ultimate sacrifice for the protection of his brother Angelotti and the lowly Baron Scarpia - the pontifical police chief, dominated by attraction compared to Tosca, whose favors he tries to obtain at any cost, they do not survive the tumult of events of a political and romantic nature, which take place during the three acts in locations specific to the Rome of the 1800s.

The world premiere at the Teatro Costanzi on January 14, 1900, brought to the public a title whose popularity would be preserved over time. According to information from the Operabase program , in the period 2007-2012 Tosca was ranked fifth in the top of the most performed opera performances.
