La Turangalîla-Symphonie d’Olivier Messiaen fut jouée pour la première fois par l’OSR lors d’un concert mémorable en 1981, sous la direction de Horst Stein, en présence du compositeur venu assister à toutes les répétitions. Ce fut alors un événement et entendre ce monument symphonique en est toujours un. Cet immense chant d’amour se développe en dix mouvements en convoquant un effectif considérable auquel s’ajoutent le piano et les ondes Martenot. N’ayant de symphonie que le nom, elle est plutôt conçue comme une symphonie concertante pour tous les pupitres de l’orchestre et particulièrement pour le piano, dont la terrible partie fut écrite pour Yvonne Loriod, son épouse. Cette œuvre vibrionnante brille de mille couleurs grâce à son orchestration rappelant les gamelans orientaux qui l’ont inspirée. Le mysticisme universel de Messiaen est à son comble dans ce chef-d’œuvre.

The OSR first performed Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie in a memorable concert in 1981, conducted by Horst Stein and the composer himself attending all rehearsals – a significant event then, this symphonic gem remains an extraordinary experience. This grand love song unfolds in ten movements, featuring a sizeable ensemble enhanced with the piano and ondes Martenot. Although labelled a symphony, it’s more like a sinfonia concertante involving all sections of the orchestra, putting a spotlight on the piano, with its challenging part specially tailored for Messiaen’s wife, Yvonne Loriod. The vibrant composition dazzles with a myriad of colors, drawing influence from the oriental gamelans that fueled Messiaen’s creativity. The universal mysticism of Messiaen reaches its zenith in this masterpiece.
