Heurs et malheurs d’un arriviste sans scrupule que même l’amour n’arrivera pas à sauver de son pacte avec le Diable… The Rake’s Progress, une délicieuse subversion du style opératique du 18e siècle, est le plus célèbre des opéras de Stravinsky. L'opéra est ici interprété par les chanteurs de l'Atelier Lyrique de l'Academy avec le Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra sous la direction de James Gaffigan.
Stravinsky eut l’idée de son dernier et plus vaste opéra en découvrant un jour au Chicago Art Institute une série de huit tableaux du peintre William Hogarth intitulée The Rake’s Progress (La carrière du Roué).

Le livret, dont il confia l’écriture au poète W.H. Auden, raconte l’ascension à marche accélérée du héros Tom Rakewell, homme faible qui, poussé par le méphistophélique Nick Shadow, abandonne sa bien-aimée (Anne Trulove) pour faire fortune, épouse une femme à barbe, se ruine, joue son âme aux cartes et finit dans un asile d’aliénés dont Anne essaiera, en vain, de le sortir.

Clôturant la période néo-classique de Stravinsky, la partition malicieuse se présente comme une délicieuse subversion du style opératique du 18e siècle, avec récitatifs, airs de virtuosité, ensembles. Distanciation et ironie en sont les maîtres mots.

Créé en 1951 à la Fenice de Venise, l’opéra connut rapidement un succès mondial qui ne s’est pas démenti depuis. C’est l’un des opéras les plus programmés au monde.

Stravinsky had the idea for his final and only full-length opera when, one day at the Chicago Art Institute, he discovered William Hogarth’s series of eight paintings, The Rake's Progress. Here is it performed by the singers of the Academy's Atelier Lyrique with the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra conducted by James Gaffigan.
The libretto he commissioned from the poet W.H. Auden tells of the rise and decline of the hero Tom Rakewell, a weak man who, urged on by the mephistophelian Nick Shadow, abandons his beloved (Anne Trulove) to make his fortune, marries a bearded lady, ruins himself, gambles his soul away at cards, and ends up in “Bedlam” asylum for the insane, from which Anne tries in vain to rescue him.
Often described as Stravinsky’s final neo-classical work, the mischievous score is a delicious subversion of 18th-century operatic style, divided into recitatives, virtuoso arias and ensembles. Distancing and irony are the key words.
Premiered in 1951 at La Fenice in Venice, the opera quickly became a worldwide success, and its popularity has endured, with it now being one of the world’s most frequently performed operas.
