Eine Abkehr vom »gigantischen Kram« forderte Anton Webern mit Blick auf die symphonischen Ausuferungen der Spätromantik. Als Gegenentwurf bot er mit seinen »Sechs Orchesterstücken « eine Verdichtung auf kurze, aphoristische Schlaglichter. Jean Sibelius folgte mit seinen Plänen, nach dem Vorbild Wagners einen Opernstoff aus dem finnischen Nationalepos »Kalevala« zu fertigen, noch ganz in der Tradition des 19. Jahrhunderts. Doch letztlich erkannte er, dass das Projekt kaum zu realisieren war. Stattdessen konzentrierte er sich auf einen der »Kalevala «-Helden, auf Lemminkäinen, einem jugendlichen Draufgänger zwischen Siegfried und Don Juan, und komponierte vier symphonische Dichtungen über dessen Abenteuer. Die finnische Dirigentin Susanna Mälkki wuchs mit Sibelius' Musik auf und ist beste Kennerin seiner leidenschaftlichen, nordischen Tonsprache. Mit einem der anspruchsvollsten Werke für die Oboe gibt der neue Solo-Oboist der Münchner Philharmoniker, Andrey Godik, seinen musikalischen Einstand. Richard Strauss schrieb sein Oboenkonzert wenige Jahre vor seinem Tod und gestaltete es als unbekümmerte Rückschau auf sein ertragreiches Lebenswerk.

With a view to the symphonic proliferation of late Romanticism, Anton Webern called for a departure from the »gigantic stuff«. As an alternative, he offered with his "Six Orchestral Pieces" a compression to short, aphoristic highlights. Jean Sibelius followed the tradition of the 19th century with his plans to create an opera based on Wagner's model from the Finnish national epic »Kalevala«. But in the end he realized that the project was almost impossible to realise. Instead, he focused on one of the »Kalevala« heroes, Lemminkäinen, a youthful daredevil somewhere between Siegfried and Don Juan, and composed four symphonic poems about his adventures. The Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki grew up with Sibelius's music and is an expert in his passionate, Nordic tonal language. The new solo oboist of the Munich Philharmonic, Andrey Godik, makes his musical debut with one of the most demanding works for the oboe. Richard Strauss wrote his oboe concerto a few years before his death and designed it as a carefree review of his fruitful life's work.
