TRAILER // WOZZECK

"Every person is an abyss, it makes you dizzy when you look down." Florian Lutz, the new director of the Staatstheater Kassel, and Francesco Angelico, general music director of the house, venture into this abyss in their first joint work as artistic directors of the music theater division. Alban Berg's three-act work from 1925, as the first full-length atonal opera, broke the audience's listening habits at the time - and was in no way inferior to the exuberant late romanticism in sheer dimensions. After the dramatic fragment  Woyzeckby Georg Büchner, Berg designed the panopticon of an abysmal world devouring man, in which the individual, struggling for a good life, perishes because of the circumstances. The battered title hero Wozzeck tirelessly plowed for the captain, wears himself out in medical experiments for the doctor - only to see his partner Marie flirting with the drum major. Driven into delusion by social conditions and his individual situation, he finally loses self-control and murders the mother of his child. Büchner's drama from Vormärz once sparked a debate about guilty responsibility - analogously, Florian Lutz reads the material as a parable on the driven individual of the 21st century between isolation, competition and the need to perform.
