Alban Berg's opera, released in December 1925, tells a true story, that of the soldier Johann Christian Woyzeck. A socially and psychomedical drama that inspired Karl Georg Büchner to write, around 1836, what is considered the first expressionist tragedy in the German language, despite being left unfinished and without a clear order in the scenes. Of these materials, Alban Berg took fifteen parts and organized a personal dramaturgy structured in three acts with five scenes each. Wozzeck is a one-man tragedy with one victim and several executioners, elevated to the paradigm of a poor and exploited proletarian class, in which material deprivations are directly related to their moral miseries.
Alban Berg's Wozzeck is the culmination of the lyrical season, with an exceptional artistic display that celebrates the arrival in Valencia of this masterpiece of the operatic genre. A cast of eleven singers, numerous figurations, choir, choir, large orchestra and up to three different groups of musicians on stage are needed to perform the fifteen scenes that narrate the process of destruction of the protagonist. The complicated musical and theatrical challenge will be taken on by the conductor James Gaffigan from the orchestra and the German stage director Andreas Kriegenburg in the production that premiered in 2008 at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich with a remarkable and praiseworthy reception, since then considered as one of Wozzeck's reference stagingsin the 21st century. Visually impressive and full of symbolism, it crudely portrays the true reality of man, his poverty, misunderstanding and the exploitation he suffers. Swedish baritone Peter Mattei, making his debut in The Arts, tackles Wozzeck's complex role for the second time after his acclaimed performance at the New York Metropolitan. He will be joined by Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek -remembered by his Sieglinde with Plácido Domingo in Les Arts- and tenor Christopher Ventris, star of the Parsifal performances conducted by Lorin Maazel in 2008.
