Wyrafinowanie, światowość i romantyzm – oto, z czym kojarzy się kultura francuska dziewiętnastego i pierwszych dziesięcioleci dwudziestego wieku. Wszystkie te cechy znajdują odzwierciedlenie w liryce wokalnej tego czasu. Czołowi kompozytorzy znad Sekwany ukazywali w swych pieśniach różnorakie odcienie miłości oraz zachwyt nad muzyką pochodzącą z różnych zakątków globu. W pierwszej części koncertu zabrzmią pełne ekspresji utwory Henriego Duparca (1848-1933), wyróżniające się doskonałym zespoleniem melodii i słów. Wśród nich dedykowana ukochanej żonie pieśń L’invitation au voyage do zmysłowej poezji Charles’a Baudlaire’a, w której czarowny obraz dalekiego kraju stanowi zaproszenie do muzycznej podróży po niezwykłych brzmieniach z tego i nie z tego świata.  

Z feerii barw kompozycji Claude’a Debussy’ego (1862-1918) i Maurice’a Ravela (1875-1937), najznakomitszych przedstawicieli muzycznego impresjonizmu, wyłaniają się niesamowite pejzaże. Pierwszy z tych twórców oddawał dźwiękami rozmaite kolory natury i odcienie uczuć zaklęte w rodzimej poezji. Natomiast Ravel wielokrotnie czerpał inspirację z ognistego temperamentu i gorącej zmysłowości zaklętej w hiszpańskich tańcach, co słychać w cyklu Don Quichotte à Dulcinée. Kompozytor nie pozostał też obojętny na atmosferę greckiej ludowości, czemu dał wyraz w cyklu Cinq mélodies populaires grecques. Bogate harmonicznie i wyrazowo opracowanie wpisało te tradycyjne pieśni – w większości pochodzące z wyspy Chios – w nowy kontekst, jednocześnie nie ujmując niczego z ich pierwotnego naturalnego piękna.  

Koncert zwieńczy zachwycająca pieśń Plaisir d’amour (Przyjemność z miłości) Jean-Paula-Égide’a Martiniego, która zachwyca i inspiruje nieprzerwanie od 1784 roku. Nieprzypadkowo melodia ta może się kojarzyć ze słynną piosenką z repertuaru Elvisa Presleya.

Sophistication, worldliness, and romanticism – this is what we associate with the French culture of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. All these features are reflected in the vocal compositions of that time. In their songs, the leading composers living by the Seine demonstrated various shades of love and admiration for music from different corners of the globe. The first part of the concert will feature the expressive sounds of works by Henri Duparc (1848-1933), enchanting with the perfect marriage of melody and text. Among them, the song L’invitation au voyage, set to the sensual poetry of Charles Baudelaire and dedicated to his beloved wife, in which the charming image of a distant country is an invitation to take a musical journey through the extraordinary sounds from this and another world.

Equally amazing landscapes emerge from the feast of sound colors in the works by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), the most eminent members of musical impressionism. The first of these artists emulated the various hues of nature and shades of emotions enchanted in French poetry. Ravel, on the other hand, drew inspiration from the fiery temperament and flaming sensuality enchanted in Spanish dances, which can be heard in the cycle Don Quichotte à Dulcinée. The composer also did not remain indifferent to the atmosphere of Greek folklore, which he expressed in the cycle Cinq mélodies populaires grecques. The harmonically and expressively rich arrangement put these traditional songs – mostly originating from the islands of Chios – into a new context, at the same time not taking away anything from the natural beauty of the original.

The concert will end with the delightful song Plaisir d’amour (The Pleasure of Love) by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, which has continuously delighted and inspired audiences and musicians alike since 1784. It is no coincidence that the melody reminds one of a famous song from Elvis Presley’s repertoire.
