In March 1875, a memorable performance took place at the Paris Opéra-Comique: the premiere of Bizet's opera Carmen. It was received with restraint or rejection, breaking too radically with the viewing and listening habits of the audience. The composer died a little later at the age of 36. He did not live to see the global success that his »Carmen« became a short time later. It is a story from below: the cigarette factory worker Carmen convinces the good corporal José to leave his bride and desert, until her flighty love turns to the bullfighter Escamillo. José cannot bear this humiliation and stabs his former lover. »Carmen« revolutionized opera and at the same time offers illustrative material for an image of women that knows no alternatives other than the good girl Micaëla or the dangerous »monster« Carmen.
